There’s a certain rhythm to life in the Conejo Valley—warm afternoons, long evenings, and an easy pull to be outside.

Over the years, we’ve found that the most meaningful outdoor spaces aren’t the ones with the most features… they’re the ones that feel like they’ve always belonged to the home—and to the people living there.

Our Creative Director, Kristina Jones, recently put some of these reflections into words for . It’s a bit more personal than what we usually share—less about projects, more about what we’ve learned designing and building these spaces over time.

And of course, none of it happens alone. Every project is brought to life by a thoughtful team, shaping each detail along the way.

On this Women’s Day, I’m reminded that building spaces — and building a company — requires equal parts vision and resolve (and an amazing team!).

Construction sites aren’t always where people expect to find women leading. But design, structure, and thoughtful planning have no gender.

We build with intention. We build to last. And we build spaces where families gather for generations.

Pro-Builder Advice: Designing a Fireplace That Truly Belongs

A well-designed outdoor fireplace does more than add warmth — it defines the space.

In this project, the fireplace anchors the outdoor living room while discreetly housing the pool equipment behind it. It simplifies the yard visually while solving a practical need.

When approaching a custom build like this, we think beyond the finish:

• Scale — the structure must feel proportional to the yard and home
• Style — whether clean-lined stucco, Mediterranean tile, or classic stone
• Structure — engineered foundation, proper flue height, and construction built to endure

The aesthetic is immediate.
The integrity is what ensures it remains beautiful for decades.

That’s the difference thoughtful building makes.

This hillside backyard had a beautiful view — but it wasn’t yet a place to live in.

Today, it’s the home everyone looks forward to visiting.

The grandparents tell us it’s become the gathering place. The children and grandchildren spend hours outside — playing, swimming, lingering by the fire as the sun fades over the horizon.

What changed wasn’t only the layout or the materials.
What changed was how the space feels.

It invites people to stay longer.
To reconnect.
To build traditions.

When a backyard becomes the heart of a home, that’s when you know the design worked.

In , we shared what we believe is shaping outdoor design in the year ahead.

We’re moving away from cool gray palettes and ultra-minimal spaces and returning to something more grounded — earth tones, texture, aged materials, and warmth layered with clean lines.

The most compelling outdoor environments today blend old-world character with modern restraint. They feel established, not staged. Collected, not constructed.

It’s a philosophy that resonates deeply here in Santa Barbara — and increasingly everywhere.

DESIGN NOTES SERIES
The Elements That Complete the Look

This project was about creating a space that feels connected—from the outdoor living room anchored by a majestic fireplace to stone retaining walls that terrace the hillside and lead down to a Bocce Ball court tucked quietly into the landscape.

An infinity-edge pool draws the eye toward the ocean at sunset, while an infinity spa—finished in elegant 1×1 porcelain tile—spills gently into the pool below. An olive tree in the courtyard adds a modern Mediterranean feel and brings a garden moment right outside the kitchen windows.

Every element was designed to work together, supporting both everyday life and effortless entertaining. A backyard that feels settled, welcoming, and meant to be enjoyed for years to come.

Which part of this space would you spend the most time in?

Pro Advice 🛠️
Heavy rains can reveal what your yard was missing—proper drainage.

During a remodel, this is your chance to get it right. In this project, we graded the site carefully and installed discreet, high-functioning drains to manage runoff without disrupting the design.

You won’t notice them—until the next downpour hits, and your yard stays beautiful and dry. 🌧️🌿

This custom fire feature is one of a kind—a striking blend between a fireplace and a fire pit, designed to anchor the outdoor living room with both presence and purpose.

Unlike a traditional fireplace, it has no chimney, making it easier to engineer and permit—yet it's tall enough to create a bold, sculptural statement. We designed it with an asymmetrical silhouette, giving space on one side for styled decor or greenery, while creating balance in the layout. The structure also acts as a Barrie, helping to define and ground the outdoor living room.

But the magic doesn’t stop at the front.

On the back side, we extended the structure with a polished precast concrete countertop and bar stools—at the homeowner’s request—to create a space where they can serve cocktails, set up catering, or welcome guests into their backyard with ease and style.

Finished in smooth white stucco to match the home, and topped with a durable, sealed concrete hearth, this feature is built to last. The long linear burner is filled with blue-shaded glass fire media, adding a coastal glow that elevates every evening gathering.

A fire feature, reimagined—for how you truly live.

A complete backyard transformation designed for easy elegance, everyday connection, and the feeling of being on vacation—at home.

Before, this backyard had all the space in the world—but it wasn’t working.
The slate stone patio was worn and too small to accommodate both a dining table and an outdoor living area. The grass was patchy, the pool coping felt dated with uneven edges, and the landscaping lacked the color and vitality the home deserved. An old, poorly placed outdoor kitchen interrupted the natural flow of the yard.

After, everything changed.
We created a generous new paver patio with room to comfortably seat eight for outdoor dining, shaded by a clean, modern aluminum pergola. The lawn was replaced with lush artificial turf for an evergreen, low‑maintenance experience. New pool and spa coping modernized the freeform pool, instantly elevating the entire space into a true tropical paradise.

By removing the outdated outdoor kitchen, we restored openness and flow—and added a custom fireplace to ground the outdoor living area, creating a natural place to gather, relax, and enjoy long evenings outside.

This is the power of thoughtful design: not just a better‑looking backyard, but a better way to live in it.

Design Notes — The Elements That Complete the Look

Our vision for this backyard: a modern tropical paradise.
Think soft island breezes, bold contrast, and clean lines rooted in nature. Every material was selected not only to perform in the California sun—but to evoke a lifestyle of ease, elegance, and escape.

- A sleek, cantilevered aluminum pergola in matte black offers bold shade by the water
- 1x2 glass tile in a shimmering tropical palette wraps the pool and spa with reflective beauty
- A second aluminum pergola defines the dining area for 8—light, airy, and built for connection
- A sculptural, asymmetrical fire feature finished in crisp white stucco brings warmth and drama
- Gray-charcoal pavers in an ashlar pattern ground the space with rhythmic simplicity

It’s the kind of space where your day slows down and your senses come alive.
Modern tropical, designed for the way you live.
