Your pool turned green. Here’s what actually happened.

Most people blame it on not enough chlorine. The pool store sells you shock, maybe an algaecide, and sends you home. You treat it, it clears up, and three weeks later it’s green again.

Here’s what nobody told you.

Chlorine has a partner. It’s called cyanuric acid, CYA, or stabilizer. CYA protects chlorine from UV breakdown, which sounds helpful. The problem is that as CYA builds up in your water, it binds to your chlorine and holds it hostage. Your test kit reads a chlorine number. The chlorine is technically there. It’s just not available to actually sanitize your pool.

There’s a formula for this. Your minimum free chlorine has to equal 7.5% of your CYA level. At 80 ppm CYA you need 6 ppm of free chlorine just to stay above the threshold. Most people are running 1 to 2 ppm and wondering why the algae keeps coming back.

The other half of the equation is pH. At pH 7.8 your chlorine is roughly 28% effective. At pH 8.2 it’s down to 14%. Same number on the test kit. Completely different water.

So the green pool isn’t a chlorine problem. It’s a system problem. CYA too high, pH too high, and chlorine that looks fine but isn’t doing anything.

The fix isn’t more shock. It’s understanding the relationship between the numbers.

What are your current chemistry readings? Post them here and let’s figure out what’s actually going on.
