Tomatoes and peppers transplanted out early, thanks to Wall-O-Waters. These are tepees with water-filled cells that absorb heat during the day, and keep vulnerable plants warm at night.

Spring prep of our 12 raised beds is underway! Some have boards that need replacing. Once that’s done, we move the drip lines out of the way and work in a mix of cocoa coir, vermiculite, Black Bear compost, and a balanced organic fertilizer. Drip lines back in place, we string the beds to mark out square feet, and are ready to plant! First up will be onions, spinach, and peas.

Warm spring weather - we are so excited for another gardening season! Here are some of our over-wintering and perennial garden stars.

We always let the late season artichokes go to flower. They’re actually thistles, and the bees really love them.

Ok, I’m excited about this (in a very plant geeky way). Broccoli and other brassicas have always been challenging to grow because of this pretty but nasty little cabbage moth. Its eggs become voracious green worms that devastate crops. I’ve always hand-picked the eggs and squished the worms, which is tedious, gross, and not entirely effective.

Recently a new acquaintance was visiting our garden, and told me this gem: cabbage moths are territorial! So all you have to do is create a decoy or two, and they won’t come near the plants. So I made some by cutting up a lid from a white yogurt container into a shape about the size of one, added the black dots with a sharpie, and bent it in half. Larry attached it with fishing line to a thick black wire he stuck into the soil. It flutters in the wind in a most realistic way, and we haven’t had a moth bother our broccoli plants since! Andrea, I owe you one!

The greenhouse is a popular spot for our plants this time of year! Moving the fig (already fruiting!!! 🤩) and the citrus outside soon. Tomatoes and peppers will move out after that. By summer, it’ll be too hot in there to do anything useful, but it sure is nice to have right now.

This time of year it’s all about the important but unglamorous work. We’ve been transplanting strawberries, starting plants in our greenhouse, weeding and amending inground beds, re-stringing trellises, replacing any worn boards in the raised beds, and amending all 12 beds. Planting in the raised beds starts in a few days and look!!! Asparagus is starting to come up! 🤩

And we begin again… fruit trees are blooming (and blossoms will hopefully survive any upcoming freezes), we’ve picked up and are starting to apply a couple yards of compost to the raised beds and in-ground plants, the row cover is off the spinach and onion bed, and most importantly, tomatoes, peppers, and other spring crops are seeded and under grow lights! Here’s to a very successful 2023 growing season.

First ripe Aji amarillo of the season! Peruvian native and dear friend Gonzo gave us the seeds. This plant is huge - it towers over our other peppers. And it’s very late in producing fruit and ripening, but they’re so beautiful and tasty. About the heat of a jalapeño. Gonzo recommends very thinly slicing into ceviche, which sounds like a wonderful idea to me.
