FIRE DAMPER TESTING REQUIREMENT

📢 Attention Illinois facility owners, property managers, and safety professionals:
Did you know that under the Fire and Smoke Damper Inspection Act (425 ILCS 13) of Illinois, inspections and testing of HVAC fire dampers and smoke dampers must be performed by technicians certified by a nationally‐recognized body (such as the International Certification Board and ANSI accredited in HVAC fire life safety)?

✅ Key Requirements You Should Know:

All fire and smoke dampers must be tested within one year of installation, and then at least once every 4 years for commercial structures. Hospitals must test dampers once every 6 years.

Inspections and testing must be conducted by certified individuals meeting ISO/IEC 17024 standards in HVAC fire life safety.

Inspectors must document the location of each damper, date of inspection, name of inspector, any deficiencies and how/when they were corrected.

The law safeguards life safety and ensures your facility remains compliant—which also supports insurance, code inspection, and risk mitigation concerns.

At Roberts Environmental Control, our team of certified technicians is fully trained and qualified to perform your fire damper linkage testing and full compliance inspections across Illinois. We handle the testing, documentation, and reporting you need to stay ahead of code requirements.

📞 Call us today at (708)-429-7700 or email [email protected] to schedule your fire damper linkage testing and inspection. Don’t wait until it’s overdue—protect your building, your occupants, and your compliance status.

We recently got the service team together for a collaborative session focused on what’s working well, where we can improve, and how we continue to raise the bar in serving our customers.

One of the key areas we discussed was our transition to the new BuildOps operating system. Getting direct input from the field is critical — it helps ensure we’re implementing tools that truly support our techs, streamline operations, and ultimately enhance the customer experience.

Big thanks to the crew for their insight, honesty, and commitment to continuous improvement. It’s meetings like this that keep us aligned and moving forward as one team.

💸 R-454B Is Coming—And It’s Not Cheap 🔧📈

The R-410A phase-out isn’t just a refrigerant swap—it’s a technical and financial pivot for every HVAC contractor in Illinois.

In our latest news, we break down what’s really impacting jobs in 2025:
✅ R-454B system redesigns require fire-rated barriers, explosion-proof exhaust, and RDS (Refrigerant Detection Systems)
✅ Massive price swings—with cylinders now hitting $700–$2,000+ and major manufacturers adding surcharges
✅ Supply chain delays and rising construction material costs tied to new A2L code compliance

The days of simple DX installs are over. Staying code-compliant now means higher costs, longer installs, and a tighter margin for error.

📘 Get the full breakdown 👉 https://wix.to/Iix2vqp
📞 Ready for a design assist or permitting support? Roberts HVAC is here to help.

As Illinois HVAC contractors pivot to A2L refrigerants like R-454B, they face more than a refrigerant swap—this transition demands fire-rated piping, advanced leak detection, higher material costs, and strict compliance with evolving Chicago codes.
