Over the years my wife Amy has often joked about our yard, likening it to the plumber's broken toilet or the hairdresser with the bad hairdo. It's all in jest because she knows the customers come first. But let me know what you think: have I totally redeemed myself here?

Finally taking some time to address our landscape, we resurfaced the deck, built a bluestone patio and walkway with brick edging, added a timber planting bed and stained it to match the deck, built a fence to hide the hvac units, and planted a fescue lawn. Hopefully our property is now a little more representative of what we do for a living!

Summer stress can impact your entire landscape.

Here in the Williamsburg area, summer heat, humidity, sudden storms, and dry spells can affect far more than just your lawn. Trees, shrubs, planting beds, patios, retaining walls, and masonry features all take a beating during Virginia summers.

A few things homeowners should keep an eye on this season:

• Brown or thinning turf
• Shrubs showing heat stress or leaf damage
• Fungal issues caused by humidity
• Overgrown or struggling landscape beds
• Cracking or deteriorating mortar joints in masonry features

Catching these issues early can often help prevent larger and more expensive repairs later.

In our latest article, we break down practical summer maintenance tips for Virginia landscapes and explain what homeowners should watch for during the hottest months of the year.

The King’s Garden can help with everything from turf and tree/shrub management to masonry preservation, repair, and repointing.
