Welcome to Southern Meadows, a private habitat garden, located in Northeast Georgia's Piedmont, zone 8a. Our goal is to create a wildlife friendly garden to support a wide variety of native birds, insects, arachnids, reptiles and amphibians . Their stories are captured through Karin's lens, a Georgia Master Gardener, Master Naturalist, and native plant advocate.

Snow day in South Carolina! Three inches of fluffy snow fell yesterday and our dogs had a riot energized by the cold and new sensory experience.

The hour long drive to my meeting isn’t bad with views like this at the South Carolina-Georgia state line looking toward the Blue Ridge mountains and the Tugaloo River railroad bridge.

A walk down to the creek that borders our property and the neighbors. I could sit here for hours enjoying the sound of trickling water and the leaves rustling in the canopy overhead. It soothes my soul and gives me so much peace.

August brought some glorious rain after a very hot, dry July. The rain lilies that I potted up from our Georgia garden have patiently been waiting to be planted in our new garden. They are doing their thing now with this lovely soaking.
These will be planted at the base of the rain chain where they can enjoy extra water and hopefully bloom prolifically.

In the native plant realm we say ‘plant natives and they [pollinators] will come’.
We are witnessing this in our new garden that a year ago was woods. We transplanted some natives from our old garden earlier this summer like this Asclepias tuberosa and we spotted our first monarch butterfly visiting today. Large milkweed bugs have also found it.
It’s such a thrill to plant for wildlife and have our garden be their home.

My garden helper is done for the day. Didn’t make it beyond the dog shower in the Mudroom.

Hello friends! I’ve been quiet the last few months as we moved from our home in Georgia to our new build in South Carolina. It’s been exhausting and exciting at the same time. This is our new sunroom and my favorite room in the house. Our plants are loving the East-West exposure. Some of the plants are vacationing outside on the patio so the room will be filled come winter. Looking forward to sharing more of the house, garden and landscaping soon.

Happy Valentines Day friends!
Today I’m sharing this beautiful moth orchid that is reblooming for us. I purchased this at a local grocer a few years ago. Once the spent flowers fell off the stalk was still healthy and green so I didn’t cut it off. It has been sitting in a north facing window all winter enjoying bright light, standard house temperatures and moderate humidity. Easy peasy! Just be careful not to overwater.
