Waterproof Shower System vs Mud Pan — What’s Actually Better? (Toledo Homeowners)
I get asked this all the time:
👉 “Is a mud pan better than a waterproof system like Schluter or GoBoard?”
Here’s the real answer from someone who tears these out all the time 👇
🧱 Traditional Mud Pan (Old School)
✔️ Can last a long time if done perfectly
✔️ Cheaper upfront
❌ Water goes through tile and sits in the mud bed
❌ Relies on weep holes at the drain to let water escape
❌ Those weep holes clog all the time (soap, debris, grout)
❌ Once clogged → water sits → mold, smell, rot
👉 I see this constantly during demo
💧 Full Waterproof System (Schluter / GoBoard)
✔️ Waterproof right at the surface
✔️ Water never gets into the mud/subfloor
✔️ Dries faster (less chance for mold)
✔️ More consistent when installed right
❌ Higher upfront material cost
💥 What I actually see on tear-outs:
Most failed showers:
Had a mud pan
Had clogged weep holes
Had no real waterproofing on the walls
👉 By the time you notice it… the damage is already done
🛠️ What I recommend:
For most homeowners today:
👉 Full waterproof system is the safer move
That’s what I install on most jobs now.
A mud pan can work…
But it has way more room for failure if anything is off.
💰 Real Cost Difference:
Mud pan: cheaper upfront
Waterproof system: +$500–$1,500
👉 That small difference can save you thousands in repairs
🧠 Bottom line:
Tile is NOT waterproof.
And if water can’t escape properly (like clogged weep holes)…
👉 it’s only a matter of time before it fails
