Sign up to volunteer for United Way of Greater Topeka’s Nancy Perry Day of Caring. The Historic Old Town Community Garden will be on the receiving end of this day of volunteer work in the community. They will be clearing out old mulch and laying down new mulch between the beds.

Each year an agency is chosen to be the recipient of donated items from the Nancy Perry Day of Caring breakfast. We ask each person who plans to attend the breakfast to bring one, two, ten items or whatever you are able to bring to help with the agency's needs. This year will be no different - and t...

We’ve had a rough go of it this year at the gardens. The gardens are doing great, flourishing, producing bountiful harvests. And our kids are learning some really valuable life lessons, about planting, nourishing, watering, weeding, harvesting, and eating from the Earth. Unfortunately they’ve had to learn some other life lessons, as we’ve had a lot of thievery this year. Full plants taken out of the ground, watermelons and cantaloupes continuously plucked before they were ready to harvest, and now someone has broken into our shed. They ripped the door right off and stole the key to the garage, but didn’t have the combination to the lock so they were unable to get in. This is the second time in garden history that the shed/garage have been burglarized. It’s frustrating, it makes me angry and sad. But you know what? I wouldn’t not garden, despite the frustrations. And life isn’t fair and people do steal. For all that has been taken, we’ve still harvested more than we need. We’ve shared with neighbors, co-workers, family, friends and strangers passing by.
We will, however, be purchasing a fence in the near future to surround the gardens and hopefully prevent some of this in the future. Keep on keeping on, my friends.
