For the last few weeks, we’ve been asking Lawrence County readers to pick between different national chains they’d like to see here.
Several of those posts reached well over 100 comments, and the answers made one thing clear: people want more options in Lawrence County.
And that is not a bad thing.
Wanting more stores, restaurants, and retailers does not mean someone dislikes Lawrence County. In many ways, it means the opposite. People want to see the county grow. They want convenience. They want more places to shop, eat, work, and spend time without having to leave home.
But mixed in with those answers, a few commenters brought up a fair point.
We already have local businesses offering many of those same products and services right here.
And that is worth sitting with.
No, Lawrence County does not have every national chain. Sometimes you really do have to make the drive to Decatur, Cullman, the Shoals, Huntsville, or somewhere else.
But we also have more local options than we sometimes give ourselves credit for.
Coffee. Food. Desserts. Gifts. Home goods. Flowers. Pharmacy service. Outdoor supplies. Furniture. Clothing. Hardware. Specialty items.
A lot of what we say we want is already being offered by people right here at home.
They may not have a national logo over the door.
They may not have a massive building with a huge parking lot.
They may not have a corporate marketing department.
But they do have owners, employees, families, and neighbors who are trying to build something here.
And that matters.
We know price matters.
For a lot of families, every dollar counts. This is not about pretending local is always cheaper, because sometimes it isn’t. On the sticker price alone, something may cost less out of town.
But the sticker price is not always the full price.
A round trip from Moulton to Decatur can cost several dollars in gas alone. A round trip to Cullman or the Shoals can cost even more, depending on your vehicle and current fuel prices.
That does not include your time.
That does not include wear and tear on your vehicle.
That does not include the extra drink, snack, or “while we’re already here” purchase that somehow turns a quick trip into a much bigger receipt.
Of course, many people are already traveling for work, appointments, school, or other errands. In those cases, stopping out of town may make perfect sense.
But for the trips made only to buy something that may already be available here, the real savings can be smaller than we think.
So when something local costs a few dollars more, the question becomes: are we actually saving money by leaving town, or are we just moving the cost somewhere else?
And when you buy local, that money stays closer to home.
It helps pay local employees. It helps business owners keep the lights on. It helps support school fundraisers, ball teams, local causes, community events, and families who live right here among us.
That is something a receipt does not always show.
This is not a guilt trip.
Nobody is saying you should never shop in Decatur, Cullman, the Shoals, or Huntsville. We all do it. There are things we cannot get here, and there are days when the drive makes sense.
Sometimes the local option may not have exactly what you need. Sometimes the chain store has more inventory, longer hours, easier returns, an app, a drive-thru, or a level of convenience that matters.
That is fair.
Convenience matters. Price matters. Selection matters. Customer service matters.
Supporting local does not mean local businesses are above feedback. Hours, service, selection, consistency, and communication still matter, just like they do anywhere else.
But when a local business does have what we need, it may be worth giving them the first look.
And yes, it is perfectly reasonable to want more big box stores, restaurants, retailers, and options in Lawrence County.
Supporting local businesses and wanting new businesses are not opposites.
Lawrence County can do both.
New businesses would bring jobs, tax revenue, and convenience. Those are good things. But the businesses already here are doing that too, often without the backing of a national corporation.
So before we say Lawrence County “has nothing,” it may be worth taking a second look.
Because we do have local restaurants.
We do have local shops.
We do have local service providers.
We do have people already taking the risk, paying the bills, hiring locally, serving locally, and investing locally.
The strongest way to prove Lawrence County can support more business is to support the businesses that are already here.
Retailers notice traffic.
Developers notice spending.
Future business owners notice whether a community shows up for the ones who tried first.
A national chain may or may not come one day.
But our local businesses are already here.
This is not about shaming anyone for shopping out of town. It is about challenging all of us, LCtoday included, to notice what is already here before assuming we have nothing.
Maybe the next time we catch ourselves saying, “I wish we had something like that here,” the first question should be:
Do we already?
And if we do, maybe it is worth trying here first.
Because supporting local does not mean you never leave Lawrence County.
It simply means you remember to look at your own front door before driving past it.
