On May 29, CCH joined Passaic County officials, community members, and history advocates to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the new Passaic County Archaeology Center at the Harry S. Vreeland House, in Ringwood. Originally constructed in 1905, the Harry S. Vreeland House is the last remaining structure of the former homestead. CCH partnered with Passaic County to complete a conditions assessment and develop renovation plans that transformed the underutilized property into a vibrant new Archaeology Center through adaptive reuse.

The new space serves as a gateway to Passaic County’s rich archaeological heritage, offering visitors the opportunity to explore artifacts, discoveries, and stories that connect us to the people and cultures that shaped Passaic County. Through exhibits, educational programming, and hands-on learning experiences, the Archaeology Center will foster curiosity, promote stewardship of the past, and preserve these important resources for future generations.

Congratulations to Passaic County on this exciting achievement and the successful opening of a valuable new cultural and educational resource!

Topping-off ceremonies mark the moment a building reaches its full height-a tradition that honors the teamwork, craftsmanship, and dedication of everyone who made it possible.

This morning, Rutgers University–Camden celebrated a major milestone at the new Cooper Street Gateway with a topping-off ceremony. The Cooper Street Gateway project will create a dynamic hub that engages both the campus and the neighboring community through the careful design of meaningful spaces. The design restores the existing historic urban fabric while simultaneously providing forward-thinking spaces for learning and community gathering.

CCH is excited to see this space take shape and the future it will serve for generations of students, as well as its role as a vital link between the campus and the greater Camden community.

Earth Week is a reminder that landscapes are not just places to enjoy, but systems we are responsible for stewarding.

Landscape architecture plays a vital role in protecting natural resources, shaping resilient infrastructure, and balancing ecological health with public access. Nowhere is that more evident than in projects centered on water, history, and long-term environmental management.

This week, we’re highlighting impactful work at Clarke Caton Hintz, including the Delaware and Raritan Canal Master Plan Update, Hudson River Waterfront, Glassboro Town Square, and George A. Pruitt Hall.

We are seeing this responsibility firsthand through our work on the Delaware and Raritan Canal Master Plan Update. In collaboration with the D&R Canal Commission, NJ State Parks, the NJ Historic Trust, and the NJ Water Supply Authority, our team is working to support a landscape that functions as critical infrastructure, historic resource, and public space.

By integrating landscape architecture, planning, and historic architecture, the project is advancing a vision that respects ecological systems, honors cultural history, and prepares the canal corridor for future environmental challenges.

This Earth Week, we’re proud to be working at the intersection of conservation, design, and stewardship.

We’re excited to celebrate two important milestones for the City of Trenton as groundbreaking begins on both the South Ward Senior Center and the Reading Senior Center! These projects reflect a continued investment in community-focused spaces for the city.

The South Ward Senior Center renovation marks the reopening of a long-closed facility at 870 South Broad Street. The project will modernize the building while preserving its historic character, introducing updated interiors and building systems to create a welcoming, accessible space where seniors can gather, stay active, and reconnect with their community.

The Reading Senior Center project, located at 15 Ringold Street, focuses on the revitalization of approximately 7,000 SF within the existing facility. The scope includes updated finishes, lighting, and building systems, along with enhancements to multi-use community spaces, restrooms, and lobby areas to support a wide range of programs and daily use.

Together, these projects represent a broader commitment to strengthening Trenton’s senior and recreation centers, creating spaces that promote connection, wellness, and community engagement for years to come!

Clarke Caton Hintz is excited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Newark Symphony Hall and the continued progress on its transformative $135 million restoration project!

As architects for the restoration, we are honored to help guide the revitalization of one of Newark’s most treasured cultural landmarks. This milestone not only marks a century of performances, gatherings, and community memories but also the beginning of a new chapter that will ensure the Hall continues to serve future generations.

The ongoing renovation will modernize the historic structure while preserving its architectural character. Planned improvements include new arts and education spaces, a black box theater, television studios, and major exterior upgrades, such as masonry restoration, new windows, and a redesigned marquee with dual LED screens. Nearly half of the building is expected to be reactivated by 2027, expanding opportunities for performances, learning, and community events.

We are proud to be part of this important effort to restore, preserve, and reimagine Newark Symphony Hall, while ensuring that this iconic landmark remains a vibrant cultural anchor for the next 100 years.

Lambert Castle reopened to the public last Friday, February 27th in Paterson, NJ following a comprehensive multi-year restoration. Michael Hanrahan, FAIA, John Hatch, FAIA, George Hibbs, AIA, James Giresi, AIA, and Cristina Alvarez, ASID Associate attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Originally built in 1892 by silk manufacturer Catholina Lambert, the “Belle Vista” estate sits atop Garret Mountain overlooking Paterson and the New York City skyline. Once a Gilded Age residence and showplace for Lambert’s art collection, the castle later served as a museum, library, and community gathering place.

CCH led the preservation effort, evaluating the historic structure and developing a phased restoration to stabilize and restore the building to its period of significance. The project also introduced new interpretive tools, including 3D-printed reproductions of historic elements and digital reconstructions of lost spaces.

The reopening returns this landmark to public life and marks an important step in preserving one of the country’s rare examples of castellated residential architecture.

We’re honored to see The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium recognized by USA TODAY as one of the USA TODAY 10Best New Museums in America for 2026!

“Tucked inside one of America’s last surviving Negro League ballparks, The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium stands as an educational and cultural hub honoring the athletes who broke barriers when Major League Baseball shut them out,” USA Today wrote.

According to USA Today 10Best, the museum’s interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations “make history come alive,” all within the very stadium where legends such as Larry Doby and Josh Gibson once played. The Museum’s website further notes, “Through dynamic public programs, educational initiatives, and community engagement, the Museum promotes a deeper understanding of Hinchliffe’s vital role in American social history and its enduring power to unite the diverse communities of Paterson.”

At CCH, we’re proud to have worked on a project that preserves this historic landmark while elevating the stories that deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.

A new vision for Taylor’s Mill Historic Site in Readington Township, NJ.

In support of a Preservation Plan prepared by Hunter Research, CCH prepared conceptual renderings for the rehabilitation the historic grist mill as a pedestrian-friendly recreational trail stop. A light steel “ghost” structure would stabilize the existing stone walls while suggesting the mill’s original form. Amenities within the structure would provide a place for all visitors, including hikers and cyclists to rest, with appropriate interpretive signage sharing the site’s local history and national significance. It was at Taylor’s Mill that grain was ground to produce food that feed the Continental Army and NJ Militia troops during the American Revolution. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the project highlights how historic places can remain visible, relevant, and connected to public life.
