One of our more challenging landscape projects in recent memory! The native soil here was loaded with rock, so much so that we uncovered a beautiful boulder during excavation and decided it deserved a permanent place in the landscape. It now serves as a natural focal point in what will become a beautiful roadside buffer, adding both privacy and curb appeal for the homeowner.

When conditions are this rocky, every planting hole takes a little extra effort. Thankfully, the excavator earned its keep on this one. Despite the heat and tough digging conditions, our crew powered through and had the project wrapped up in just a day and a half.

This installation features a mix of ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses designed to provide year-round interest, seasonal color, and increased privacy as the landscape matures. The fresh black mulch really ties everything together and makes the plant material pop.

A big thank you to the homeowners for trusting us with their vision. We think this one turned out pretty swell—especially considering what we started with! What do you think? 🌳🌿☀️

Another landscape refresh complete! 🌿✨

This church landscape was ready for a little rejuvenation, and the results speak for themselves.

We redefined and expanded the bed edges, cleaned up overgrown plant material, installed fresh premium black mulch, and incorporated new perennials to provide season-long color and interest. The refreshed landscape now better complements the beautiful historic architecture while creating a welcoming entrance for visitors and members alike.

Sometimes it doesn’t take a complete redesign to make a dramatic impact—fresh edges, healthy plantings, and quality mulch can completely transform the appearance of a property.

Thank you for trusting Young Hickory Landscaping with another landscape improvement project!

We’re about 3 weeks away from being out of the pruning window for your ornamental and or fruit trees. Once buds break open with warmer sunnier days ahead, the trees should be left alone to begin their new growth cycle for this year. Call today to rejuvenate your tired trees! We are currently booking into the week of the 16th.

Crab Apple, Dogwoods, all fruit bearing trees, flowering pear trees, crimson king maple, and more!

Pruning a fruit tree is not about shaping. It is about directing sunlight and airflow into the canopy where fruit actually forms.

THE 3 D'S — DO THIS FIRST

→ Every winter, remove all dead, diseased, and damaged wood before anything else. This alone solves most fungal and pest problems before the season starts.

APPLE AND PEAR TREES

→ Open the center. Remove any branch growing inward, straight up, or crossing another limb. The goal is a vase or modified central leader shape that lets light reach every branch.

WATER SPROUTS

→ Those thin vertical shoots growing straight up from branches produce no fruit. Cut them flush to the branch — they only steal energy from productive wood.

HEADING VS THINNING CUTS

→ Heading cuts shorten a branch and trigger bushy regrowth near the cut.
→ Thinning cuts remove a branch at its base and open the canopy.
→ Most home orchardists make too many heading cuts and not enough thinning cuts. When in doubt, thin.

YOUNG TREES — 1 TO 3 YEARS

→ Focus on structure, not fruit. Select 3 to 4 well-spaced scaffold branches and remove competing leaders. Early training saves decades of corrective pruning later.

ZONE TIMING

→ Zones 7 to 9 — prune late January through February while fully dormant
→ Zones 5 to 6 — prune late February through March before bud swell
→ Zones 3 to 4 — prune late March to April. Never prune when temperatures drop below 20°F

A well-pruned fruit tree produces fewer but larger, healthier fruit — and is far less vulnerable to disease.

🥶 Temps remain low but, morale remains at an all time high! A few snapshots into our apple tree pruning day today.

Do your fruit trees look like this? They may seem full and healthy now, but once buds open and they leaf back out for the upcoming season they will surely be shading out the tree’s core. Limiting both air flow and sunlight for the younger healthier limbs to mature into fruit baring branches.

An overgrown tree will also create more fungal issues you will see on their trunks and along the branches. Next come the insects to nest on these diseased and dead branches. Insects thrive in a humid and densely shaded area such as these. By pruning trees and removing all dead and diseased branches we eliminate insects homes while also reducing the amount of pathways they can easily travel throughout the tree once the growing season starts. Sunlight exposure and good airflow are a must for a healthy 🌳!

This is not to say that these trees are at all in bad shape. In fact they have been routinely maintained and had a minimal amount of diseased or dead branches. You can even see the main canopy branching that was established a few years ago when their last pruning was done. Removing the excess growth and water suckers that do not yield fruit will focus the tree’s energy into developing new younger growth, as well as encourage established healthy limbs to produce more fruit! Albeit we avoid a late frost, which we all know isn’t easy in upstate ny 🤞🏻.

How bout them 🍎’s???!
