Plant your trees higher than you think! Urban Forestry of Tucson

Good morning social media world. Happy Monday. Today we want to talk about planting practices. This time of year when we’re planting a lot of trees we get this question relatively often. The new tree owners are worried about those roots you can see exposed. This is completely intentional and per our industry planting standards. Those first roots need to remain dry so “plant em high to keep them dry”. Part of the reason we plant so high is to account for settling. When the dirt below the plant is disturbed it will settle over time. Meaning the plant will end up lower than when we planted it. Also, potting media is mostly organic matter, and what happens to organic matter? It breaks down. So again, the tree settles and ends up lower than intended. When we teach planting classes we tell the students to plant so high it freaks the customer out 😂. Any small roots exposed to the air will desiccate (air prune), they’re a non issue. Planting height is one of the most important parts of tree planting and this is how it should look. 🫡🌳

Have you ever wondered what our designs look like? 💫 Here's a sample of a recent design for a Tucson, Arizona, family who wants to grow food!

At Desert Primrose Gardens, we have a responsibility to provide designs that are both aligned with your goals and aesthetic while being mindful land stewards.

We accomplish this by providing rainwater harvesting with every project, leading with native plants, and approaching edible gardens with practicality for our desert environment.

Ripe figs are droopy, come off the stem pretty easily, and can ripen further on the counter if you need to harvest before the birds.

I couldn’t wait to try it, though 😋 First fig of the season.

Peep the gravel ground cover in the “before?” Just dig 🪏 it into the soil! No need to remove it and send to a landfill. 🚫 Use the gravel as a soil amendment like you would pumice.

Tucked all under a blanket of soil-building mulch, supported by passive rainwater 🌧️ harvesting (earthworks) and drip irrigation. This food forest if just beginning, and has a full site plan to expand the existing native ecosystem throughout this 1 acre property.

Palo Verde trees fill in the tall canopy feeding soil 🦠with nutrients and providing filtered shade for understory fruit trees. Prickly Pear Cactus, Brittlebush, and other naturally occurring native plants surround the outer margins of the food forest. We will augment the existing plants with other food-bearing shrubs (Wolfberries) and habitat (Milkweeds and Native Honeysuckles) for a beautiful, abundant, nourishing landscape.

Have you ever heard of a food forest?

These are Everbearing Strawberries 🍓 and they are big! I should boost with a little bloom fertilizer to see if I can get a bigger harvest. Kids fighting over 1 berry is not my idea of a good time.
