Line and Space LLC, Architects

Line and Space LLC, Architects Leaders in resource conserving architecture since 1978 In addition to being architects, we are general contractors.

Line and Space, LLC was founded in 1978 in Tucson, Arizona by Les Wallach, FAIA, to facilitate the design and building of environmentally sensitive architecture that respects and responds to existing site conditions. Our work is known internationally and has been recognized by peers through the receipt of over 140 architectural and environmental design awards, including the American Institute of A

rchitects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (2-time recipient), the AIA Western Mountain Region Firm of the Year, and the AIA Arizona Sustainable Firm of the Year. We strive for quiet integration of structure and landscape – our projects encourage and demonstrate notions of sustainability and environmental stewardship. We are students of regional influences and favor the deeper meaning of entry sequence, scale, materials, color and form, all of which are important in successful architecture. Having built some of our projects gives us unique experience and invaluable knowledge of construction, allowing us to maximize architectural possibilities within budgetary constraints.

On April 24, Arizona Masonry Council hosted its 34th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architecture Awards at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.

Attending the event, Line and Space Principals Henry Tom and Johnny Birkinbine were joined by Marty Klell of Pima County Facilities Management and Paul Pena from Lloyd Construction Company, Inc.. We were honored to receive the 2026 Excellence in Masonry Award for the recently completed Pima County Northwest Service Center in Tucson, AZ.

The project reflects a commitment to material honesty, craft, and long-term resilience. Through the preservation of the former bowling alley’s existing basalt stone masonry wall and the integration of new exposed concrete masonry construction, the project establishes a contemporary civic landmark rooted in Tucson’s desert context and architectural heritage.

We feel a tremendous level of gratitude for the talented people who helped realize this project.

Thank you to the Arizona Masonry Council for this recognition.

Our Line and Space team recently participated in a photo shoot of the Richard Elías-Mission Library, directed by Bradley Wheeler Photo, capturing the project prior to turning it over to Pima County Public Library.

For our team, this moment is one of reflection— seeing how light, material, and form come together as well as experiencing the spaces as they were imagined.

It’s a unique moment to pause and document the project just before it begins its next chapter—taking on a new life as a space for the community.

Stay tuned for the official dedication date.

Built block by block to serve a community.

We are honored to receive the 2025 Excellence in Masonry Award from the Arizona Masonry Council for the Pima County Northwest Service Center.

Designed as a 40,000 SF civic hub, the project brings health services, workforce development, and community programs together in one place—expanding access to essential resources in northwest Tucson.

Masonry forms both the structure and character of the building. Warm gray concrete masonry units establish a durable, grounded presence, while subtle shifts in texture catch the desert light and create rhythm across the façade throughout the day.

Inside, exposed masonry walls frame circulation and gathering spaces, where skylights and full-height glazing reveal the depth and craft of the material. The precision of the stacked coursing reflects the work of the masons who built it, giving the building a quiet civic permanence suited to its role in the community.

We are grateful to Pima County Facilities Management, Pima County, the project team, and craftspeople who made this work possible.

Thank you Arizona Masonry Council for this honor.

Architecture, when rooted in craft and place, can quietly uplift a community for generations.

Coming soon!

A few glimpses inside one of our current projects—the new addition & renovation of the Pima County Public Library Richard Elías – Mission Library.

One of the details that might catch your eye: the light wells. We’ve mounted 3form panels on stand-offs, allowing them to glow with layered light—naturally illuminated by the desert sun and softly backlit by concealed LED fixtures. The effect shifts throughout the day, bringing depth, warmth, and movement into the heart of the library.

We can’t wait to share more as this project continues to take shape.

The Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) has received another accolade, earning a 2026 IDEAS Award for Excellence in Architecture—one of just six projects nationwide recognized this year by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and Building Design+Construction.

The IDEAS Awards celebrate projects that push the boundaries of structural steel, combining design excellence, sustainability, and resilience. Being recognized alongside such forward-thinking work is truly meaningful.

Juror Thomas Robinson, Principal at Lever Architecture, commented:

“It’s all steel, all exposed, and incredibly elegantly designed…a conversation between multiple buildings. The facade and shading aren’t just functional—they’re expressive.”

We’re deeply grateful to our collaborators The University of Arizona, University of Arizona Health Sciences, UA College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, Andrew Weil, M.D. Esther Sternberg, M.D. Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, General Contractor DPR Construction, Steel Subcontractor J.B. Steel, Martin White & Griffis Structural Engineers and our partners who helped bring this vision to life.

AWCIM continues to inspire as an example of architecture that is resilient, intentional, and meaningful—a space where design and structure work hand in hand to create lasting impact.

It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden passing of our friend, colleague, and Principal, Jared Logue, AIA, NCARB.

A mentor and a quiet presence within our firm, Jared embodied humility, generosity, and grace. Those who knew him felt his kindness in subtle ways: in the calm he brought to a room, in the steadiness others came to rely on, and in the care with which he approached both his work and the people around him. His influence was never loud, but lasting—shaped by consistency, thoughtfulness, and abiding regard for others.

A proud University of Arizona College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture graduate, his love for the outdoors informed the projects he touched, whether through the way he framed a view, selected materials, or reminded us to pause and notice the world beyond a building’s walls. Those subtle gestures spoke to his respect for place, purpose, and people. The desert, an environment he deeply cherished, was also where he was tragically injured while enjoying an adventure with friends.

Jared’s eighteen-year journey at Line and Space began as an intern, and over the years, he grew into a profoundly capable and confident architect. As his craft developed, he stepped fully into his professional self—taking calculated risks, approaching projects with quiet confidence, and leading teams with an understated authority. As he grew into his architecture, so did his hair: Jared and his flowing locks became synonymous, always paired with his signature floppy sun hat and beloved Chevy Camaro IROC- Z—small details that reflected his independent spirit.

Throughout his multi-faceted career Jared contributed to numerous award-winning projects that reflect his respect for nature, place and thoughtful design, including the recently completed University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, the Pima County Northwest Service Center, and the University of Arizona Poetry Center Green Space. His work consistently elevated projects beyond the built form, leaving a tangible legacy of craft and intention.

We will carry Jared’s memory forward in the way we work together, care for one another, and honor the communities and the natural and built environment he valued so deeply. His legacy lives not only in his completed projects but in the lessons he shared, the example he set, and the kindness he brought to everyone he encountered.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Jared’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Line and Space for the establishment of the Jared Logue Line and Space Scholarship and Internship, supporting University of Arizona architecture students.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10am-1pm on February 28, 2026, at the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. (1502 E. Mabel St., Tucson, AZ 85719)

We’re grateful to share the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) has received two additional national and regional architecture awards, further affirming its role as a model for health-centered, integrative design.

Following last month’s recognition in the 2025 International Architecture Awards, the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine project was recently honored with:

• Honorable Mention – 2025 American Architecture Awards, presented by The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies

• 2025 AIA Arizona Distinguished Architecture – Merit Award, one of the AIA’s highest honors for contemporary design excellence

The 30,000-square-foot, three-building complex reflects the core principles of integrative medicine—mind, body, and spirit—through materiality, spatial experience, and a deep connection to the Sonoran Desert. The project serves as both an educational center and a living laboratory, exploring the relationship between the built environment and human well-being through climate-responsive, sustainable design strategies.

We’re thankful to our collaborators, UAGC - The University of Arizona Global Campus, University of Arizona Health Sciences and Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine for their shared vision and trust. It’s an honor to see this work recognized alongside so many inspiring projects.

We are proud to share the Sahuarita Regional Library has been honored with a 2025 American Architecture Award, one of the nation’s most prestigious recognitions for design excellence.

The 17,000-sf library is a vibrant community hub, offering spaces for all ages, study and meeting rooms, a maker space, a gaming center, and a multi-purpose room that opens to a shaded outdoor patio cooled with tempered relief air in the summer.

The design connects to the Sonoran desert landscape through ribbon windows framing earth berms and rainwater-irrigated bioswales. Steel “shards,” inspired by the region’s mining heritage, define outdoor reading patios and bring soft natural light inside.

We’re grateful to Pima County and the Sahuarita community for their partnership in creating this welcoming, inspiring space.
