Occasionally in summer you might notice the brown, dead trips of a branch or two on a mesquite tree. This is nothing to worry about. It is the work of the mesquite twig girdler (Oncideres rhodostricta). They girdle the twig, then bite into the effected twig and lay eggs that will be the larvae of this longhorn beetle. The larvae bore into the cambium and then deeper into the wood of that twig. Other beetles may take advantage of this twig. The damage is like pruning that only makes canopies more lush the next year. There are many beetles that have larvae that take advantage of dead wood in mesquites. So often, people talk about “borers” killing mesquites or other trees. Mesquites are like hotels that provide for many insects. And only a sick mesquite would have any issue with these beetles. When a tree is unhealthy, and someone suggests “borers” give them the side eye. Listen to the people who help you better provide for your tree by improving watering techniques and sleuthing out the conditions that may be stressing your mesquite. We’re lucky enough to live in a region that is not burdened with many non-native insects. Native insects have evolved with the plants in their ecosystems, and they don’t tend to kill their hosts. More often, with large trees, it is humans who are killing trees, usually by causing dropping water tables as we suck the southwest dry with our population and water-wasting lifestyles in an arid land.
