**Stow your provisions before you leave the marina.**

Putting groceries away on a yacht isn't quite like putting them away at home. Once you're underway, glass bottles can shift, groceries can move around, and refrigerator doors that aren't completely closed can cause bigger problems.

Secure breakables, organize the refrigerator, and make sure everyone knows where frequently used items belong.

Then cast off and enjoy the reason you came! ⛵

**Don't just read the galley inventory list—check it!**

On our second charter, a can opener was listed on the inventory sheet, so we assumed there was one aboard.

The next day—with a boat full of canned food—we discovered otherwise.

Before leaving the marina, physically locate the things you know you'll need: can opener, coffee maker and filters, grill tools, cutting boards and other galley essentials.

Some lessons you only need to learn once!

**Eat your most perishable foods first.**

Use delicate produce and foods that spoil quickly early in your charter. Save sturdier fruits and vegetables and shelf-stable ingredients for later in the week.

And don't throw away those bananas when they start getting too ripe. Freeze them and use them for smoothies later.

Planning the order in which you use your groceries helps reduce food waste while gradually freeing up valuable refrigerator space.

**Cook once—eat twice!**

If you're grilling chicken for dinner, make a little extra. Tomorrow's lunch can be chicken over a hearty salad or tucked into a wrap.

The same strategy works with grilled vegetables and other proteins.

A little extra cooking today can mean almost no cooking tomorrow—which leaves more time for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying your anchorage.
