A couple examples of what I see a lot. That dark dust in both pictures is from wear: it’s metal residue(dust). I rebuilt this Weslock garage door lock today with a new latch plunger assembly and a new spindle, and tightened all the internal parts, and lubricated the wear areas. Often I can rebuild locks, but most of the time when I get to inspect one, they often need replacement.
