Done right, a Passive House structure should be a cool refuge from the summer heat. Here are some ways it will help you stay cool:

🏠 We ensure your house is oriented on the property in a way that will maximize coolness in summer and warmth in winter.

🪟 Good window orientation takes the angle of the sun into account during every season. When a window is placed well, it will let sunshine in during the winter and be angled away from the sun in the summer.

🌲 Using foliage and naturally shady spots to your advantage will help keep your house cool when it’s warm outside.

🌬️ Excellent insulation will help ensure that your home stays at a comfortable temperature during blazing hot summer days and frigid winter nights.
Airtight construction helps not only with temperature control but also with moisture control. Reducing unwanted moisture means your home is more comfortable *and* healthier to live in.
Incorporating a heat recovery ventilation system reduces the amount of energy it takes to keep the temperature even while bringing in plenty of fresh air.
All three of these elements work together to help your home hold its internal temperature, whether you need it to be cozy or cool.

🧱 In dry climates, solid materials, like bricks and concrete, can absorb heat during the day and release it during cooler nights, helping even out interior temperatures.

Temperature control is just one reason we ❤️ Passive House design!

Earlier this spring, we got to welcome Lindsey to the team!

Lindsey is senior architect with the firm. She’s spent more than a decade working in the custom residential, multi-family, and commercial sectors of the industry in Portland, New Jersey, and here in Olympia.

She tells us she loves the “very beginning programming phases of a project where we get to dream big and figure out how to make everything fit together.” She also loves teaching and working with younger staff,

“I’m excited to get into the details and start designing beautiful interior spaces that reflect the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. My passion is interior architecture and design and I'm really excited to get to focus on that here!”

Outside work, she spends as much quality time as she can with her husband, their one-year-old daughter, and their two dogs. If she gets a chance, she loves to run, garden, or curl up with a fantasy novel.

We’re so glad you’re here, Lindsey!

WOMEN OWNED BUSINESS FEATURE !!!

Madison Del Vigo () is a shimmering example of a local, successful woman entrepreneur. As a real estate broker with Coldwell Banker Evergreen Olympic Realty, Madison is the top 3% of 94,000 Coldwell Banker agents worldwide. 💫 Her design-minded, customer-focused approach really resonates with us.

We’re so glad you’re helping people find and create homes in our community, Madison!

AGAP: What made you want to start this business, in particular?

MDV: I’ve always had a love for homes, design, and building — it was passed down to me through my family. My grandmother built a home in Alaska with a revered California architect that was featured in Sunset Magazine in the ‘70s. My mom designed and built every home I grew up in as a kid. It doesn’t surprise me that I was drawn to real estate, the tangible process of helping people find and create a home.

“Our home is the warmest, brightest home we have ever lived in. That it can be warm and comfortable, year-round, and operated inexpensively, with as many windows as we have, is remarkable. Those factors, coupled with excellent air quality while the home is sealed, have made our first year of living in this home enjoyable, beyond our expectations.”

Zachary S.

We loved working with Zachary! And we really love hearing how satisfying, comfortable, warm, and bright our Passive House design has been for him and his loved ones.

Honestly, we’re getting used to these kinds of reviews. Passive House works! ✨

We’re in the business of placemaking. To inform our work, we look to many different types of architecture from all around the world and across time.

We’re especially mindful of this when we’re working with local tribes. We value tribal development and the impact they have on this, their native land.

When we work with these local nations, we try to help them make the best design and business choices possible. In part, we do that by understanding the heritage of this land.

Don’t feel like working? It could be your office space. Just a few adjustments can make a big difference.

Here are 5 things you can do to revive your office:

☀️Use natural light to your advantage. Position your desk so you can see a window or so sunshine falls across your work surface.

🖼️Add personal touches. Frame a print you love or display objects that help you feel loved and inspired.

🎨Use color theory to your advantage. Sprinkle yellows and oranges in your workspace to help you feel energized, blues and greens for calming focus.

🪑Change things up. If you’re in a rut, move your furniture around. Sometimes raising or lowering your desk or reorganizing your office is enough to make things feel fresh.

📚 Get organized. A cluttered space can derail your concentration. Take 15 minutes to shelve some books and take care of your dishes. And don’t underestimate the power of a dusted desk!

Jason, our feasibility specialist and director of sales, has this to say about what his dream architectural project looks like:

It looks like a reclaimed public space featuring architecture, large scale landscapes, art, water and (importantly) the people creating the ongoing stories of this place.

So, plenty of moments that offer opportunities to “ooo” and “ahhh” at the buildings and plants, beautiful places to pause and relax, opportunities for people to find their own routes of sensorial discovery, and places where you can take in the social interplay of people.

"And my ideal of ideals with all of this is that the area would work in concert with the local ecology."

Here are some of the projects that Jason loves:

🔷Seattle's in-process waterfront connection replacing the viaduct.
🔷The University of Washington's Tacoma campus.
🔷Portland's riverfront park replacement of Harbor Drive.
🔷The Cheonggyecheon stream in Seoul.
🔷The Bonaventure urban boulevard in Montreal.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎️💚

It might seem like a stretch to be talking about the built environment on a day when we’re celebrating the natural world but the way we build and maintain the structures where we dwell actually has everything to do with stewardship of our beloved planet.

As architects, our role extends far beyond creating aesthetically pleasing structures. We’re called to use our expertise in innovative design practices to create resilient buildings that minimize environmental footprints, integrate sustainable materials, and optimize energy efficiency. When we build responsibly, it helps us tread more lightly on the Earth and preserve our planet's precious resources for generations to come.

Creating spaces for our community to enjoy is what gets us out of bed in the morning! Being architects isn't just about buildings; it's about crafting experiences that bring people together. We're absolutely stoked about the commercial projects we've been working on lately!
