Remembering my father, Sidney Branch Meadows, on Father’s Day.
Dad met Greg Smith in the U.S. Navy, in which both served in WWII.
Mr. Smith and his family had a camellia nursery in Mobile, Alabama, and Daddy had a horticulture degree from Southwestern in Louisiana.
Over the next 50 years, the two developed Flowerwood Nursery into one of the largest wholesale nurseries in the world.
I grew up on Dog River and right next door to Flowerwood.
We spent many hours of our childhood riding through the acres and acres of nursery stock: thousands of Azaleas, Camellias, and container plants lined up in beds as far as the eye could see. Learning plant names and growth habits entered our consciousness like the breath that entered our bodies.
Daddy taught us a reverence and delight over the miracle of nature and growth that happened right before our eyes.
We watched all phases of plant production: cuttings rooted, liners in massive greenhouses, containers combining to maturity in the field, and finally, all those plants loaded onto semi trucks to garden centers all over the country.
Thanks, Daddy, for the hours spent by your side, watching you create beauty for the world.
