We’ve seen a few of these floating around, so let’s talk about it…
At first glance, this looks pretty official.
State seal. Case number. Judge’s name. Big bold scary words like “FINAL,” “MANDATORY,” and “NO DISCRETION REMAINS.”
Designed to get your attention…and your panic level up.
I’ll admit, I almost fell for it.
I immediately scanned the QR code and was ready to send over all the Ulta points they requested before ole Judgie Rodriguez dropped the hammer on me.
Then I slowed down for about 10 seconds…
Judgie Rodriguez, quite honorable guy, sitting in Cumberland County District Court…probably doesn’t have jurisdiction over violations in the State of Michigan.
Also, speaking of Michigan, M.R.S.A. are Maine statutes, hence, M.R.S.A. Or Maine Revised Statutes Annotated, as it were…
Also, you don’t just toss a section symbol in there like seasoning. “29-A” isn’t a section. Therefore, you do not write M.R.S.A. § 29-A § _____
Then it lists unpaid tolls, speeding, parking violations…
But cites § 2411-A as the authority…
Which is OUI.
So unless I was driving in excess of the speed limit, while intoxicated, through a toll booth, without paying, all while parked in Michigan…we’ve got some issues.
Bottom line…
This is a scam.
Do not scan the QR code.
Do not send money.
Do not send Ulta points.
I’ll be saving mine for a more legit scam.
If you get something like this and you’re unsure…reach out and ask.
We’d much rather look at it for you than take a report after the fact.
