Even so-so plant people like me get stumped every once in a while. This Hoya Latifolia (old name Macrophylla) is from a plant I purchased years ago. For the longest time it did NOTHING! Didn’t die, but didn’t grow either. A little research later, and I got it to start growing. However, with the neglect my greenhouse got this year, something was going on with the plant and I knew I was going to lose it.

So … before the whole plant was lost, I took a couple still-good cuttings from it and immediately stuck them in spagnum moss to attempt to root. (Crossed fingers and toes!)

I was unable to save the original plant, but these survived! So, like in life … we will try again. Hopefully, this guy will root in stronger than ever and grow big enough that I can root some cuttings to post for those that love the textured and color contrasting look of this Hoya.

Sunday, I potted up cuttings from my Hoya AH-074. Not sure how it got that name, but I can tell you, it’s not one you’ll find in the local nurseries. My “mama” originated as a 3 leaf cutting I purchased back in July of 2023. Once rooted, it was potted and re-potted and retrellised several times before I found the right fit. Once it started really taking off, I took a few cuttings, rooted them and potted them back into the original pot to give the Hoya more growing points.

Once established, this particular Hoya is fast-growing! It has thick waxy, medium-sized elongated leaves, with a touch of splash in them and positioned somewhat close together on the vine. The umbrels (flower clusters) are rather large with a showy display of 20-30 pink fuzzy flowers. The flowers shown were from June. It has consistently been blooming since, and the whole plant pic is from this afternoon with 2 more umbrels getting close to blooming!

The cuttings were put in sphagnum moss (my favorite for Hoyas) back in August and September and then I wanted to keep them in the moss for my classes in April. So you can see by the time I took them out yesterday, they had substantial roots! I put all three in one pot, which will be for sale as soon as they root in and start sending new growth!

Pink Princess Philodendron!!! This plant was all the rage not too long ago, and prices were easily $100 for a small plant! Fortunately, popularity and availability have brought the prices down so that everyone can enjoy them! (I do not love the medium they are potte in, so if you do find one at a big box store I recommend you repot it!) These plants are unique because of their pink variegation, which is especially exquisite against the darker green of the leaves. These upright growers can make perfect desk plants in small pots or if given slightly larger pots and moss poles to climb they can be beautiful living room floor pieces.

Side note: Once these beauties root in, they will most likely be in the $25 price range, and hoping they go quickly. Philos don’t especially love my west-facing greenhouse! 😊🌞

PS - We have moss poles for sale as well.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I only have 4 radiation treatments left, and I’m looking forward to when I’ll start feeling more like myself! Had a good morning yesterday, so made it out to my very neglected greenhouse to pot up some props I’ve been working on in the house this summer. I’m only going to post finished pots for now, but later I will post before and afters with some propping info, as well as a mama pick for my Hoya AH-074 that is in full bloom currently! Some people like to buy large, full-grown plants, but I prefer to buy them small and watch them grow! Mama pics show you the plants potential. So I will try to make those posts this week. But here are some of the ones I potted yesterday, Hoya AH-074, Pink Princess Philodendron and String of Buttons.
