EARLY CONTAINER UPDATE!

Since Monday was the unofficial start of summer I thought I would share some updates on how my containers are looking so far. In addition to these I will also be sharing pics in a few weeks of the 15 “trial containers” I have. Any Priven Winners annuals that I am considering carrying in the greenhouse next year I am testing out first in these containers. We only want to sell what performs the best!

Hope your plants are coming along as well as mine. And FYI: I gave all my containers a generous handful or two of slow release fertilizer when they were first planted (I use Oscomote). Other than watering regularly I have not done anything else. That’s the magic of Proven Winners plants! Would they perform even better if I were giving them a liquid fertilizer every week? Yes! But I guess I can just add that to the list of other things that probably aren’t going to happen either!

As the summer progresses I will probably fertilize more. But I am really looking for “plant and enjoy” varieties. I will keep you posted. Until then, enjoy these pics of what is happening so far!

“YOU’RE DOING WHAT!”

I have taken a few days off since closing the greenhouse for the season but thought I would share a planting project. To the shock of many, I am growing roses onto my roof! While that may sound bizarre to those of us in Southeast Missouri it really is a common thing to do, especially on Nantucket. The attached photos are from Nantucket, specifically the Scionset section of the island famous for its rose covered cottages.

I had the trellis attached to the roof last year (FYI: There is a readily available type of caulk called “Through The Roof” specifically made to make a watertight seal around screws when screwing into a roof) and planted a David Austin Rose called “Malvern Hills”. Unfortunately it did not do well. I know that David Austin roses are amazing and have heard rave reviews about them. Maybe it’s something I am doing wrong but I honestly have had no luck with them. Two years ago I discovered and started planting “Drift” roses. They are going crazy and I have planted over 150 of them now. Will share pics of those in an upcoming post.

But, Drift roses are not climbers so can’t use them to cover a roof. So today I am planting “Zephrine Drouhin”, a beautiful thornless climber. I’ll give it a few weeks and share pics of the progress! So, if you haven’t already, FOLLOW US to see updates to this and other garden projects. Will also be updating how the 47 planters (not a typo!) that I have are doing. Trialing several new Proven Winners varieties so I can let you know what is working the best!

HOW MANY TIMES CAN SOMEBODY SAY “WOW” and “THANK YOU”!

Our first season of the greenhouse is a wrap. We started with 8,000 plants, hoping to sell half. In the end we only had about 60 plants left. Those will be donated to the Saxony Memorial and some of the local churches.

Going to take a break for a while! Will continue to post pics of how my planters are doing as well as progress on the gardens. Thanks again for all the support! Definitely doing it again next year! So, if you haven’t already, FOLLOW US to see progress on this project as well as other projects happening. Will also be updating everyone on the 47 planters (no typo!) that I have planted. Trialing several new Proven Winners varieties. Will be sharing pics of what is working the best!

LAST WEEKEND FOR 2026!!!

I keep saying this but WOW! What a first year.! We started with 8,000 annuals hoping to sell half of them. We only have about 600 left!!!!

Reminder that everything is marked down to $3.50 and tomorrow anything left goes to $1.50!!! And as a bonus, all Dragon Wing Beginias are a tray of 10 for $10.00 (have the most of those because I screwed up and ordered them twice!). That price is good today and tomorrow!

Thanks again for all the support. Hoping to see a lot of familiar faces today and tomorrow so you can get some bargains!!!!

“WHAT WE STILL HAVE LEFT…”

Getting several messages asking what we still left. I took the following pics of most of the things that we have a full tray or more of left. Have probably 10 or 15 more things one tray or less. I’m guessing 500-600 plants left out of the 8,000 we started with.

Again, it’s all half price at $3.50 today and tomorrow. Sunday, anything left goes to $1.50!

FUN FACT!!!!!

One of my favorite plants in my garden is the “Annabelle” hydrangea. Mine are loaded with buds and will be blooming huge white clusters of flowers in about another two weeks.

Annabelle Hydrangea is a staple in English gardens. The pic above is showing one at Hidcote Gardens, one of the most famous gardens in England.

And here is the fun fact….why is this hydrangea that is all over the great gardens of England called “Annabelle”? That’s because it was first discovered in Anna, Illinois, less than an hour from here! Definitely hope to have this one next year in the nursery.

Again, we are open 9-3 through Mother’s Day. All remaining annuals are now $3.50 and anything left Sunday (which probably won’t be much) goes to $1.50! And, the gardens continue to be open for tours so even if you don’t find a plant to purchase it’s still worth the trip!!!!

TRYING A FEW NEW THINGS

It’s bizarre to think that we still have 5 days to go for our 2026 season but it’s almost time to start ordering for next year!

Even though we had a huge selection this year, I still only had room for a fraction of what I wish we could have had. So, I’ve narrowed it down to about twelve new Proven Winners Varieties that I am considering. To see how they perform I ordered one of each from Proven Winners Direct (Yes, I spent the $11.95 per plant to try them out so you don’t have to!).

I think this year we could have had a few more options for the “Pillar” in the “Pillar, Filler, Spiller” concept. So, these are the three tall plants I just received. They are an Angelonia, a Gomphrena, and a Cleome. As they mature I will post pics and let you know what I think.

Also, just a quick update on this years containers I planted. I am VERY happy with how the “Supertinia Mini Vistas” are doing! The “mini” just means the bloom is smaller, not the plant size. I only had two this year , a yellow and a purple, but will have more next year. The yellow is interesting because just sitting in the pots in the greenhouse I was not overwhelmed by them. But when I see them in the containers they look great. I just took the pics of them so they are not showing their full blooms from the rain. Only have a handful of the purple left and maybe 30 of the yellow. Definitely one to pick up if you stop by.

Again, all remaining annuals are now $3.50. This Sunday (Mother’s Day) is our last day for this year! Open 9-3 through Sunday.

THE LAST THING I NEED IS ANOTHER PROJECT!!!

As the headline says, the LAST thing I need is another big landscaping project. So logically, I’m starting another big landscaping project!!!

I am very pleased with how the greenhouse has turned out and how it is looking. I am also very pleased with how the gardens are looking. The problem is there is an area between the two that is sheer ugliness!!! As you can see from the pic there is nothing here except an area sloping too much to even set up plant racks. So stay tuned!!!! This is going to be a big project, heavy equipment and skid steer just showed up to get started. This project will involve tons of stone and hundreds of plants. I will be posting with periodic updates so FOLLOW US if you want to see the transformation.

Another reminder that the greenhouse and gardens will be open all weekend, 9-3 each day. Stop by and have a look at the areas I’m not embarrassed to show you!!!!!

IF YOU ONLY BUY ONE PLANT THIS YEAR…..

Starting to hear a lot of feedback already from my “Supertunia Skeptics”, especially from people who bought the Bubblegum variety. I’ll say again, these “supertunias” are night and day different from standard petunias. In the pics above the hanging basket is one bubblegum planted in mid February. It will more than double in size from this. The second is one plant in a pot planted about three weeks ago to show how quickly these grow. One plant can get up to two feet tall and six feet wide! If you have been unimpressed with petunias in the past, try these. We have about 30 left out of the 200 we started the season with.

And just a reminder, this weekend the greenhouse will be open our usual hours, 9-3 each day and the gardens will be open for anyone who wants to walk through. Hummmmm, either buy locally grown plants in an actual garden OR buy them off some store’s asphalt parking lot? Seems like a no brainer to me!!!!!

HEDGE TRIMMING 101

If you live anywhere near me chances are you do not have a flat property. Some of my beds slope significantly. When I started planting all my hedges I initially thought they wouid look best all trimmed the same height and basically follow the contour of the land. BIG MISTAKE!!!

After further study, especially looking at English gardens, I quickly learned that the tops of hedges should always be straight and level. If need be you can “stair step” them but always keep the tops of each section level.

The pic above is the view from the front of my house down to the pond garden. One thing that is driving me crazy and testing my patience is the hedge to the left of the tall hedge. It is taking forever to grow! The tall hedge is about 10 years old and has reached the height I want. I started the hedge plants to the left from cuttings about five years ago. They have finally filled out and are the correct shape. They are just about four feet tall and they will need to get to about 8-10 feet. I want each side to be the same height framing the entrance to that part of the garden with the tall juniper in the center. This will probably take another 3 or 4 years.

This is a VERY formal look. In the next post I will show pics of how I add a little less serious side to the garden!
