Going home tomorrow! This vintage dining table was scratched, dinged, completely sun faded and generally worse for wear. My client asked for it to be restored to its original rich, dark color. Not too bad, if I do say so myself. 😁

More pics later.

Going home today! This beautiful late 19th century oak highboy was really showing its age. The drawers were all broken, the frame was coming apart, it had water and burn marks on top, and someone had once covered it in blue paint, the remnants of which were embedded in the grain. My client's mother loved this dresser and wanted it returned to its former glory. With layers of aged varnish removed, the grain now shows beautifully. All the parts have been properly reglued and/or reinforced, and old escutcheon nail holes have been filled and color matched. Even the casters got a little oil so that they roll better. And who knew that under all that tarnish those drawer pulls were solid brass. I'm really hoping seeing her cherished dresser revitalized makes their mom super happy!

Flashback to one of my first projects when I decided to do this furniture thing for real. Also, one of my favorite projects. Puppy teeth got nothin' on me...I can fix that! Ps, furniture is not a good substitute for a rawhide. 🦴🐶

This is 2/3 of the drawers that I've had to strip and refinish on a library cabinet for a customer. Does anybody else see little "wow" faces on the drawer fronts? Maybe I've been staring at them for too long!

This week in the workshop...
Work has begun on this lovely oak chest of drawers. My customer doesn't want changes (thankfully, bc I'd hate to paint this baby!), just return her to her former glory. She'll need some repairs -- the drawers are misaligned and need new stops, side panels are loose, there are some water stains on the top, and a lot of old blue paint stuck in the grain. I'll strip off the old finish, and stain and put a new topcoat, then polish up those brass handles and she'll be good as new!

Need to pull old paint out of wood grain? This is the trick that works for me...

My client asked me to strip a black painted cabinet back to natural wood. After stripping amd light sanding, all of this black paint is left in the grain -- and it's oak, so you know that grain can hold onto a lot! With a chip brush, and working a small areas at a time, I brush on denatured alcohol and let it sit for a few seconds. Right away you can see it starting to dissolve the paint. Let that process start, but don't let the alcohol dry. Using a fine wire brush, brush, and working in the direction of the grain (as always), brush the paint out of the grain. Time consuming? Yes. But absolutely worth it to end up with this pristine wood.

Stay tuned to see the end of this project...it will be stunning (if I do say so myself 🤭)!
