Timing is everything in gardening, especially when it comes to pests.
But plants and insects don’t follow a calendar—they follow the weather. Warm weather speeds up their growth, while cooler temperatures slow things down.
Now that temperatures are consistently reaching 50°F, the clock has started for tracking “degree days.” Degree days offer a more reliable way to know when something will happen in your garden, instead of guessing based on calendar dates. Using degree days can help you take action at the right time, when pests are most vulnerable and plants are at key growth stages.

As the growing season winds down, many gardeners turn their attention to cleaning up and preparing beds for winter. While leaving some plant material can support beneficial insects and wildlife, diseased plants should be removed to keep problems from returning next year.

In the vegetable garden, rotating the location of where you plant crops each season also helps break pest and disease cycles and promotes healthier plants.
