This week’s tree: the mighty Quercus alba — better known as the White Oak!
🔎 How to identify it:
• Rounded lobed leaves with smooth edges
• Light gray, flaky bark that almost looks plated
• Produces acorns with a shallow cap
• Massive, wide-spreading crown as it matures
🌱 Fun fact: White Oaks can live for hundreds of years and are considered one of the strongest and most valuable native hardwoods in Pennsylvania. Wildlife absolutely depend on their acorns for food.

🌳 Tree ID Tuesday: Meet the Red Maple (Acer rubrum) 🍁
Did you know? The Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is one of the most common — and most adaptable — trees in Pennsylvania. You’ll find it in wet areas, dry hillsides, and everywhere in between.
🔍 How to spot it:
• Leaves usually have 3–5 pointed lobes with a light, silvery underside
• Brilliant red fall color (one of the best around)
• Smooth gray bark when young, becoming darker and slightly ridged with age
• Small red flowers and seeds in early spring
⚠️ Why it matters:
Not all maples are created equal. Proper identification helps with pruning, diagnosing issues, and knowing how a tree will grow near your home or power lines.
