Young beech trees are famous for this. The phenomenon is called marcescence, and nobody knows exactly why some trees do it. It is thought keeping the old leaves on might be the tree trying to protects its buds. This could deter animals from eating the buds over winter when the trees are young and so close to the ground.

Once you notice it, you’ll start seeing it everywhere in New England forests.
