There’s an art to a shelf that actually looks good. Most styling fails happen because we over-fill or under-fill. The trick is layering, and once you know the rules, it gets way easier.

+ Leave negative space
Aim to keep 30-40% of the shelf empty. Your eye needs room to rest. Less is almost always more.

+ Vary heights
Pair something tall with something medium and something low. Never line up three items at the same height.

+ Style in odd numbers
Groupings of 3 or 5 always feel more natural than pairs. Trust the rule of odds.

+ Mix textures
Ceramic, woven, leather, wood, glass, metal. Texture is what makes a shelf feel collected, not catalog.

+ Use books as risers
Stack 2-3 horizontally and place a smaller object on top. Instant height, instant designer trick.

+ Anchor with something organic
A branch, greenery, fresh florals. Every shelf needs one living element to feel alive.

+ Lean, don’t always stand
Art looks more intentional when leaned against the back of the shelf instead of perfectly centered.

+ Layer front to back
Place taller items behind shorter ones and let pieces overlap slightly for depth.

+ Repeat colors
Pick 2-3 tones and let them repeat across the shelf. Curated color stories feel intentional.

+ Edit, edit, edit
Style, walk away, come back, edit. The best shelves are the result of editing, not over-filling.

A wave to all the new faces around here 👋🏼 So glad you found us!

Quick intro before we get back to the good stuff . . . I’m Rebecca, this is my design firm, and we obsess over creating warm, layered, livable homes for families across LA and beyond. The kind of homes you actually want to come home to.

Around here you’ll get behind the scenes from our active projects, design tips you can actually use, hot takes I probably shouldn’t say out loud, and a whole lot of refined California casual.

Anyways, I think you’re going to like it here 😉🫶🏼

They weren’t wrong 😉

There’s something so satisfying about a kitchen done right. The layout, the materials, the details . . . every choice intentional, every inch designed to be both beautiful and lived in.

Cooking up some more as we speak 🙌🏼

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, this one’s the whole love story.

The came to us with a fragmented layout. It had a powder bath taking up valuable kitchen real estate and an awkward office nook breaking up the flow. We reworked it into a kitchen that actually fits the way the family lives.

A custom bar where the office used to be, a pantry where the powder bath was, a beautiful waterfall island anchoring it all, and every detail chosen with intention.

Swipe through to see the magic and some of the process.

Wishing you all the best weekend 🤍

Cabinet hardware is one of the most overlooked design decisions and also one of the most impactful. K***s and pulls are the details your hands touch every single day, and they have the power to elevate or completely flatten a space.

A few reasons hardware matters more than people realize:

+ It sets the tone of the entire room
The right hardware tells you whether a kitchen is traditional, transitional, modern, or something in between. Builder grade hardware reads as builder grade, no matter how beautiful the cabinetry is.

+ It adds character and warmth
Unlacquered brass, antique bronze, polished nickel, blackened iron . . . each finish brings its own personality. Quality hardware introduces texture, contrast, and patina that flat finishes can’t replicate.

+ It’s a high-touch, daily-use detail
You interact with these pieces dozens of times a day. Investing in solid, well-made hardware is one of the most worthwhile splurges in any renovation.

+ It mixes beautifully across metals
Layering finishes (like brass with polished nickel or aged bronze with iron) is one of the easiest ways to add depth and intention. Matchy-matchy hardware throughout an entire home reads dated.

+ Scale and proportion matter
A pull that’s too small on an oversized drawer or a k**b that’s too dainty on a substantial cabinet throws off the entire visual balance of a room.

+ Mixing k**bs and pulls is intentional
We almost always use k**bs on doors and pulls on drawers. It’s a small detail, but it makes a kitchen feel custom, not catalog.

The best part? Hardware is one of the easiest upgrades you can make without a full renovation.
Swap out builder grade for something with weight, finish, and character, and watch your space transform.
