🌱 Is Yellow or Brown Sod Still Good?
Many people assume sod must be perfect dark green to be healthy, but that isn’t always the case.
Sod is a living plant, and after it’s harvested it can sometimes show temporary discoloration.
Light yellowing can happen from:
• Heat during transport
• Lack of sunlight while stacked
• Temporary stress after cutting
This doesn’t necessarily mean the sod is bad.
In most conditions, sod is best installed within 24 hours of being harvested.
If it’s kept cool, shaded, and not overly saturated, sod can often remain installable for 24–48 hours.
In some cases, sod can still survive 48–72 hours after harvest, but extra care is important during this window:
• Keep pallets out of direct sunlight
• Avoid stacking pallets too tightly
• Allow air circulation around the sod
• Install and water as soon as possible
If sod has been sitting too long, it may show signs like:
❌ Strong sour odor
❌ Slimy or mushy grass
❌ Extremely dry or brittle roots
Fresh sod should still feel moist, flexible, and alive.
When installed properly and watered well, it will usually recover and establish strong roots.
At The Sod Outlet, we focus on fresh-cut sod, dependable supply, and timely delivery and installation so your lawn project gets the best possible start.
