How to choose a cabinet finish.

Giving cabinets a new look is a great project for the interior of your home. It can enhance the look of your home and really highlight your beautiful kitchen. The difficult part is deciding what finish to go with.

Painting Cabinets: You have a plethora of colors to choose from. Paint covers wood grain and leaves a solid color. Paint also hides wood used in cabinets.
Staining Cabinets: Stain seeps into the grain and allows for definition of wood to be seen. Staining is usually less expensive. Touching up stained cabinets is much easier to blend on the surface.

Leave exterior painting for the summer.

At very low temps, paint will freeze. The point at which paint will freeze depends on the type of paint. Latex paint is water based so that means that it will freeze right around when water freezes, 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Oil-based paint which is thicker has a lower freezing point. The freezing point for this type of paint is around -4 degrees Fahrenheit. However, average cold temperatures still affect performance of paint.

Issues that can occur with low temps.
*Longer dry times even up to a few days between coats
*Poor color uniformity
*Water spotting can form
*Improper film formation or cracking film
*Poor protection by paint

When filling a hole, leave a “mound” of filler over the hole.

Have you ever seen the nail holes in trim slightly visible even after it was painted? The reason is because fillers can shrink after they dry leaving a small crevice. The following steps teach you how to properly fill holes.

Step #1: Use a putty knife or your finger to fill the hole. Fill the hole above the surface creating a small “mound”.
Step #2: After the filler dried, sand down the area to surface level and not more.
Step #3: Prime those areas you sanded. Primer bonds to wood better than paint does and paint bonds better to primer than to wood.

How to choose the right wood filler.

There are many different wood fillers, putty, and spackles and it can be difficult to choose the best one. Answer the following questions to select correctly. This will be more important than looking for a certain type of brand.

#1: Does it need to be flexible? Trim and siding on the exterior of the house expands and contracts due to changes in temperature. Flexible fillers also expand and contract in the space they accompany. Interior fillers however do not need to be flexible as most homes are kept at a constant room temperature.

#2: Does it need to be color matched? If you are staining wood then the filler needs to be matched as close as possible to the wood. If you are painting the surface, the color matching isn’t necessary.

How to paint harlequin (diamonds) on your walls.

For the best aesthetic appeal the width should be half of the height.

Step 1: Measure the width of your wall.
Step 2: Then divide the width by the amount of diamonds you want horizontally.
Step 3: Multiply the number by two to get your height.
Step 4: Find the middle of each diamond and then mark the top, bottom, left, and right corners.
Step 5: Using a straight edge connect the dots to complete the pattern.
Step 6: Tape along the pattern and paint!
