Rainy day in May, perfect for finally using all the cattail, iris, gladiolus and spreading blue rush I gathered and dried last Summer. I’ve watch many videos online but finally decided to purchase an actual course, “Twining with Natural Materials” by and I’m glad I did, my first three attempts are already much better than the progress I’ve made doing random YouTube tutorials occasionally over the past year. The center basket is my first attempt, the left basket is my second and the right one is my 3rd, in progress. I aspire to the smooth rounded sides of his basket but that’s going to take a lot more practice. This isn’t one day’s work by the way, it’s a slow process and I’ve been working on them all week. It’s going to take a lot more little baskets to feel competent but I enjoy this type of weaving, just for fun, there is basically not much actual function to a tiny little basket but I find them so charming. Twining will never take the place of willow for me but the upside of only needing to soak materials for 20-30 minutes vs. the complicated process of soaking and mellowing willow over a couple weeks is a pretty big one!
I’m looking forward to adjusting the techniques for kids for the Wade Creek Farms summer camps coming up (wadecreekfarm.com) especially the fairy and gnome camp, I’m imagining we can make tiny baskets and go gather the tiniest flowers we can find to make fairy basket bouquets . 😊
