Sometimes a garden design needs to take into consideration the pets that may also be enjoying the space. In this experimental grassy patch, I’ve been planting California native grasses that would be friendly to pets (mainly they do not have sharp seeds and they can handle being laid on). Here Remi is laying on Sporobolus airoides, though there are also some Melica imperfecta, Bouteloua gracilis and yarrow plants in this mix.

I loooovveee California fuchsias. I love the rusty color that the California buckwheat flowers turn. I love how the monkey flowers and Monardellas flop around and criss cross with nearby plants. I love the little pops of color, the scents of leaves… I guess it’s a good thing then that I’m a California native plant landscaper/designer/gardener/whatever-you-want-to-call-it 😏

Sloped backyard that dips into a barranca that cuts through town. Planted about 10 months ago - a mix of California native plants and fruit trees. Feels really nice to meander down this hill - and there’s always birds and butterflies galore to greet you.

Our garden at the end of summer, after a heat wave

🌵 a huge buckwheat plant that I planted before I knew much about cultivars + some of the cacti in the cactus corner
🌻 encelia californica going strong
👾 fig season
💛 solidago californica has the best yellow blooms
‼️CA fuchsia season too
😱 another shot of the buckwheat and cactus corner
😜 the same buckwheat because it’s so pretty
🦔 agave in the backyard near some fruit trees
🥬the very wild vegetable garden with kale, tomatoes, zucchini and a few other things
🍦iris because my mom like irises
🌵 the cacti are flower and soon we’ll have pitayas
🟩 the backyard seems entirely green from this angle - it’s a collage of fruit trees and flowering plants
🥜 when I took a picture of the buckwheat, I saw this pile of peanuts that I assume the crows left behind
🔹 another look at the vegetable garden because this kale is several years old and it’s silly that it’s still growing

I didn’t know instagram let you put so many photos on a post now 😬

The hummingbirds were going wild for this Grevillea ‘Moonlight’. It’s an Australian native plant and you can find a variety of flower colors in the many different types of Grevilleas that are available in nurseries. Though there are plenty of CA native plants that also offer nectar to hummingbirds this time of year, I couldn’t resist these interesting yellow flowers.

I have one of these for you if you would still like one! 🌿💛

Carlos and Zach have been making my path dreams come true 💫 Reusing and repurposing materials is not necessarily the easiest option - it can require some creativity and care - but it’s worth the effort when prioritizing sustainable practices.

Made a lot of progress this week and to celebrate on this waaaaarm day, we grilled!
