This is a picture of a tiny rock chip that hit this windshield right on the edge in the black area. Even though it is very tiny, you can see the tiny white impact point. Viewing the previous posting of a stress crack, you will not find that tiny white impact point. This is what you should be looking for in determining a stress crack on not. This tiny rock chip created a crack just over a foot long. The Crack Crew attempted to fix this crack and hopefully it will hold. You will see a before and after of the crack.

This is a picture of a stress crack in a windshield. Stress cracks can happen by known or unknown reasons. Many times it just happens and no one is at fault; neither the customer nor the glass shop. Nevertheless, many glass shops guarantee their installed windshields if a stress crack should occur. Usually a stress crack will occur within the first few days after installation.

The company that installed this windshield is a national company. You have seen their commercials on TV and they are the largest windshield company in America.. This company installed this windshield and a short time later this crack appeared. The customer called the glass company and they came out to inspect it. The technician told the customer that there was a tiny rock chip in the black area of the windshield and that their warranty would not cover the windshield. The customer then called Tri-State Windshield Repair for a second opinion and this is a picture of my observation. I did not find a tiny rock chip in the black area of the windshield. When viewing a rock chip, you will usually see a tiny white spot where the impact point is.

The moral of the story is that just because a company has a written warranty does not mean they will always honor that warranty. Find a shop that you can trust!

OEM stand for “Original Equipment Manufacturer”. OEM is also known as dealer glass and it usually can only be repurchased from a car dealership. OEE stands for “Original Equipment Equivalent”. OEE is also known as aftermarket glass and is usually purchased from glass companies. OEM glass is usually more expensive than aftermarket but is it better quality glass? That is the ongoing debate. Over the many years of experience I have had with windshield replacements, the one commonality is that they both will break. Actually, the first piece of glass of every car that breaks is OEM glass.

This video is how we can be influenced on the quality of glass when maybe no one knows.

We recently did a back power sliding window for a 2016 Chevy truck. Only the left part of it was broken but with these if any part is broken you have to replace the entire thing! This was quite the project as you have to take out the back seats just to get to the window’s motor. So if you ever need to break a window to get in your vehicle, go with a door window 😃

When we removed the windshield, we found a very bad case of rust on the windshield channel of a 2001 Chevrolet Astro Van.
The urethane that is used to glue the windshield in the vehicle does not adhere to rust.
In a car accident the previous windshield would have had a good chance to exit the vehicle with this amount of rust.
Small amounts of rust on the windshield channel can cause the windshield to leak water in those spots or create air noises over time.

As you will notice, most of the urethane pealed off the windshield channel when we removed the windshield.

What had to be done was to grind off all the rust so that only the metal of the windshield channel was exposed.

Next, we had to apply a primer to the exposed metal so rust could not start again.

And finally the finished product!
