Clocks fall back this weekend. 🕔

Which means starting this week, a lot of us are coming home in the dark.

Groceries in one arm. Phone flashlight in your teeth. Flipping through a ring of keys trying to find the one for the front door. Then the one for the deadbolt. Then the side door, because let's be real, that's the one you actually use.

Here's something most people don't know: your doors don't all need different keys.

If your locks are compatible, we can rekey them so one key opens every exterior door. Front, back, side, garage entry. One key. Every door.

Lighter key ring. No guessing in the dark. And way fewer copies floating around that you've lost track of.

If your locks aren't compatible, we'll tell you straight what it would take. No pressure.

So be honest: how many keys does it take to get into your own house? Drop your number below. Bonus points if you can't remember what half of them open. 👇

Tonight's the one night a year everybody wants to knock on your door. 🎃

Little superheroes. Tiny dinosaurs. At least four Spider-Men per block. Parents trailing behind with flashlights and coffee.

We spend all year thinking about front doors. Tonight, we just want to see yours.

Show us your Halloween door! Drop a photo in the comments. Full-on haunted house, one lonely pumpkin, a skeleton in the window, we want all of it. Let's fill this post with every spooky, silly, over-the-top door in Connecticut.

And tell us: what's the best costume that's rung your doorbell tonight? 👻

Happy Halloween from all of us at Lock Guard. Have fun out there, and save us a peanut butter cup. 🧡🖤

Quick question. When you lock your front door, do you have to lean on it?

Push it with your shoulder. Lift the handle a little. Jiggle the key until it finally catches.

If you just nodded, you're not alone. And it's not your imagination.

Connecticut falls are rough on doors. Warm afternoons, cold nights, humidity up and down. Wood doors and frames swell and shrink, and the bolt stops lining up with the strike plate.

Here's the part that matters: sometimes that bolt only makes it partway. It looks locked. It feels locked. But a deadbolt that isn't fully extended isn't doing the job you think it is.

Try this tonight. Open the door and throw the deadbolt. Smooth? Now close the door and do it again. If it's suddenly harder, that's an alignment problem, not a bad lock.

One more thing: please don't spray WD-40 in there. Oil attracts dust and grime and makes it worse over time.

This is a quick fix for us. Strike adjustments, lock servicing, a full fall tune-up so your doors are ready before winter shifts them again.

So tell us: who's a leaner? 🙋 Be honest.

Here's a Connecticut story most people have never heard. And you're carrying the proof in your pocket right now.

About 4,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians built wooden locks that used pins to hold a bolt in place.

Fast forward to the 1800s. An American inventor named Linus Yale Sr. builds a pin tumbler lock based on that same ancient idea. His son, Linus Yale Jr., actually wanted to be a portrait painter. He gave that up, joined the family trade, and in the 1860s patented the small cylinder lock with the flat, notched key.

The same shape of key you used this morning.

Then, in October of 1868, he and his partner Henry Towne founded the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company. Right here in Stamford, Connecticut. It started with around 35 employees and grew into a global company with more than 12,000.

Yale Jr. never saw any of it. He died that Christmas, just two months later.

(And no, it has nothing to do with Yale University. Different Yale entirely.)

So every time you turn your key, a few tiny pins line up on a line thinner than a hair, and a 4,000-year-old idea perfected in Connecticut does its job. That little mechanism is where we spend our days.

Be honest: did you know the modern lock was born in our state? What's your favorite piece of Connecticut history? 🔑
