Call me crazy, but there’s magic to making a mess with mud (beyond just my cheesy alliteration 😉). I’m a mud enabler, meaning that I encourage my kids to dig in and get messy. It’s a very necessary antidote to the abundance of screen time we’ve got going on these days with distance virtual learning, and this kind of free play liberates kids from the rules and constraints of schedules and typical indoor activities.

Outdoor play can be unstructured and child-led: giving kids ownership and authorship is important all the time, but especially now when routines are so out of whack. It has lasting benefits in and out of the classroom on language development, increased confidence, and positive social-emotional effects among many others. In my new video (link below) I explore these ideas and more, and I talk about the basics of setting up an outdoor playscape- with special guest Rusty Keeler, author and designer for Kaplan Early Learning Company and Guidecraft.
