The 4-Light Horizontal double-hung window, once a staple of the 1950s-60s mid-century ranch home. Metal jamb liners, spiral balancers, and 100% solid wood construction. While metal-wrapping over these frames and vinyl insert replacement windows have seemingly made these relics disappear, they still have a charm, a warmth, and an important architectural purpose: to complement the horizontal architecture of the ranch home. It's nice to see some still surviving to this day. 😌

Done correctly. A transom above a double-hung window, the same height as the two sashes. This makes proper use of equal proportions, especially important when there are no nearby entry door heights to line up with.

Once a staple of many mid-century American ranch homes, the Reuten Tru-Bow OR-Series bow window gave dimensional character to the rather horizontal nature of ranch homes. Customers were able to choose which specific windows they wanted as venting awning windows as well. The cut sheet from an original Brosco Millwork catalog circa 1969 details this old relic.

The ever elusive "slip-head" window, sometimes called a "jib" window. A built-in pocket within the wall framing allows the lower sash to disappear into the wall for maximum clearance and allows the upper sash to behave more like a decorative "transom." I swear, I wish more modern homes had windows like these. Functional, simple, beautiful & elegant.

I've always loved those charming half circle outswing casement windows that flank chimneys on Dutch colonial homes 😊. This red interior is DEFINITELY appreciated, such a bold statement.

There is something to be said about stained glass... its beauty is timeless. I decided to bring some color into the workshop and make this sash from scratch. Hopper/transom style venting window with exterior insect screen.

It's always best to have the grille bars APPLIED to the glass surface to see the contrast, as seen in this example. Known as "Simulated Divided Light" Grilles. Here we see them used effectively and tastefully on these 400 Series Tilt-Wash double-hung windows.

Challenge: Standard size vinyl awning window unit, installed in a non-standard-size frame opening, but still has to look... good. LOTS of packout needed to fit this bad boy, but I just got creative with trim. I have to say, it came out better than I thought it would!

400 Series Perma-Shield® Casement Windows doing what they do best in their single unit configuration: oriented to actively direct cross-breezes in and out of your living space. These are an excellent option for thermal efficiency and unobstructed views, but make sure you keep your hinges and operator arms lubricated twice a year with silicone-based spray l**e to maximize operational performance.

A fine example of using the traditional architectural principle of decreasing the height of windows with each ascending floor. Historically, it has always been an indicator of high-quality architectural design and craftsmanship as it makes perceived proportions a top priority, even for the most casual observer. The end result? A well-balanced fensetration that just looks "correct".

This Stanley entry door was in dire need of a new sill since the metal one rotted away from the frame due to years of unfinished neglect. I decided to make a new one the traditional way out of wood with the old school 14° pitch. New sweep weatherstrip with built-in rain drip cap hood, AND a new paint job to match the roof using SW 0041 Dard Hunter Green, which is a historic color. Came out great!

This is a special one. I built this venting octagon hopper window from scratch for a powder room that needed light and ventilation. I decided to use venting transom window hardware and modern compression foam weatherstrip to give it modern maintenance convenience yet with traditional flair and construction. Fully removable single-pane glass sash in seconds if needed, with custom screen and storm window to boot. This is a unique one-off that I've been asking why we don't use hopper windows more. This was a fun one!!
