What a transformation! Through a thoughtful and intensive addition and renovation, the historic building, originally built as a Morrison’s Cafeteria, was given new life as Hackers Golf Simulator and Restaurant. The front entrance design element reimagines a building that once faded into the background, transforming it into an iconic and highly visible destination at Hilltop. With a modern form and elegant materials, the new porte cochere creates a grand entrance that is warm, inviting, and welcoming to guests, while also helping elevate the building’s overall style.

Building Element Series | Serving Bars: The serving bar is more than just a functional element—they’re often the focal point of a restaurant. It’s where people gather, connect, and enjoy good food, drinks, and community. In our design process, we focus on elements like the bar to reflect a company’s values and mission. Through materials, form, and detail, we communicate the brand without saying a word. This is where form and function come together.

We are excited to share this iconic oceanfront project! This renovation was all about honoring the home’s original coastal charm while introducing a refined interpretation of a traditional style. Key details like the original stair railing, built-in casework, shiplap wood paneling, and arched doorways were preserved. The 1980s east addition was reshaped to be harmonious with the original structure and provide a retreat style primary suite. Expansive windows put the focus on views of the ocean, along with a clean modern color palette, create an interior atmosphere that feels bright, thoughtful, and timeless.

Spring’s here—and so is brunch season! Bay Local’s newest spot—its first stand-alone restaurant—is bringing eclectic vibes to a reimagined iconic building (yes, that was a former Pizza Hut). Turning it into a modern coastal social hub through adaptive reuse was a fun challenge—and collaborating with the Bay Local team made it even better. Check it out next time you’re brunching—you’ll love the transformation!.

Yorkie’s is the newest addition to the ViBe! A modern deli that’s all about great food, culinary creativity, and community. We are proud to have helped bring Kip Poole’s vision to life in an adaptive reuse of a historical industrial building. It’s a feast for the eyes and the stomach, with an open teaching kitchen with patron bar seating, private dining space, and an immersive gallery showcasing local artists. It’s the perfect spot for great food and good people in an eclectic atmosphere. Check it out the next time you are in the ViBe Creative District!

Madeline Nero-Maslaney is a licensed architect and LEED accredited professional with a passion for art, design, and sustainability. A Norfolk native, Madeline attended the College of William and Mary with a major in art and art history. She pursued a master’s degree in architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and began work at a Manhattan firm, focusing on design of research facilities. After 12 years in the city, she returned to the Tidewater region to be closer to family. Madeline was thrilled to join the Altruistic team in 2022 and enjoys working on boutique residential and commercial projects while helping clients pursue their dreams and visions for their spaces. She served as a commissioner for Norfolk Arts for 6 years and strives to foster community engagement with the visual and performing arts. In her free time, you can find Madeline taking dance and Pilates classes and spending time with her husband and daughter.

Building Element Series | Butler’s Pantry : The Butler’s Pantry embodies Altruistic’s design ethos by prioritizing both form and function with a deep focus on the owner’s daily rhythms. Through natural light and harmonious alignment with the kitchen, it creates a private secondary work zone and additional storage, reflecting the philosophy of creating spaces that support everyday life. The pantry’s thoughtful layout and attention to owner specific needs demonstrates a commitment to enhancing quality of life while ensuring that every detail contributes to a purposeful, efficient, and welcoming environment.

From service station to community brewery! Vibrant Shore Brewery is an adaptive reuse project that embraces the industrial vibe of the original 1950s service station. With a steel mezzanine and a rooftop patio, the first of its kind in the ViBe District, Vibrant Shore is a perfect blend of old-school character and modern craft. Cheers to new beginnings!
