Who else loves ferns? Ferns are ancient plants with a rich history:

1. **Ancient Existence:** Ferns are among the oldest plants on Earth, with fossil records dating back over 360 million years. They predate dinosaurs!

2. **No Seeds or Flowers:** Unlike flowering plants, ferns reproduce via spores. They don't produce seeds but release microscopic spores from specialized structures.

3. **Adaptive Success:** Ferns have successfully adapted to various environments, from rainforests to deserts. Their ability to thrive in different conditions contributes to their global distribution.

4. **Prehistoric Forests:** During the Carboniferous period (around 300 million years ago), ferns played a crucial role in forming the coal deposits that we use today. Ancient forests were dominated by towering tree-sized ferns.

5. **Lifecycle:** Ferns undergo a unique two-stage reproductive cycle involving a sporophyte (the visible fern plant) and a gametophyte (a smaller, often inconspicuous structure).

6. **Bioindicators:** Ferns are sensitive to changes in the environment, making them useful bioindicators. Their presence or absence can signal environmental health and air quality.

7. **Edible Uses:** Some fern species are edible and have been traditionally used for food. However, caution is necessary as some ferns can be toxic. The fiddleheads (young, coiled fern fronds) of certain species are harvested for culinary purposes.

8. **Biodiversity:** There are thousands of fern species, showcasing a remarkable diversity in shapes, sizes, and habitats. They contribute significantly to the Earth's plant biodiversity.

Leaves and branches have no nutritional value. They are not eaten by cattle and horses. Pigs, goats and sheep are eaten. Sheep and pigs can be poisoned by eating fruits with seeds, as they contain amygdalin glucoside, which breaks down in the stomach into hydrocyanic acid. Cake from oil pomace is used to feed horses, sheep, and cattle.
The protein contained in the zhmyz by sheep is digested by 83%, fat by 8.9%, BEV by 73.2%, fiber by 14.1%. 100 kg of feed at 13.1% humidity contains 11.7% of digestible protein or 54.15 feed units .

Home plum fruits contain vitamins A (in dark-colored fruits), B1, B2, C and P and the necessary elements: potassium, phosphorus (the content of which is higher than in apples and pears), calcium, magnesium, iron. The sugar content (depending on the variety and growing conditions) ranges from 9 to 17% (fructose, glucose and sucrose). Plum fruits also contain organic acids (malic and citric, as well as oxalic and traces of salicylic), pectin, tannins, nitrogenous substances [

By crossing blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) (2n=32) with cherry plum (Prunus divaricata) (2n=16), a plant was obtained that is completely identical to domestic plum. This plant, like the domestic plum, had 2n=48 chromosomes. Probably, wild plum in the course of evolution turned out in this way .

Flower buds are simple, give 1-3 flowers. The flowers are white, 1.5-2 cm in diameter. The self-fertility of the plum depends on the variety, but the yield always increases when there are different varieties in the plantings.

The choice depends on the purpose of the acquisition. They buy fully ripe, soft plums for food - they are the sweetest and juiciest. For storage, cooking compote and jam, dense fruits are chosen - they will better retain their shape in blanks and do not deteriorate the next day. When choosing plums, they are guided by three general indicators.
