We’re taking down hollyhocks. See the red blossom at the top for height of this big mama.

These come up in our gravel driveway and they don’t get a lot of water which helps to keep them upright. They’ve naturalized on our property – there are dozens all over the place.

Sinningia is a type of Hardy Gloxinia. It was a fabulous random find at a nursery near UC Davis. I’m a big fan of every type of gloxinia. I think this stalk is about 4’ tall. Hummingbirds appreciate a lot of nectar plants in the garden.

Today is National Buy the Plant You Want Day! Aka Mother’s Day. I got myself this lovely Cape Primrose, Streptocarpus. I’ll keep it in my kitchen window for a while and then add to the container garden outside.

I feel like fuchsia is so festive in the garden. It’s really hot and arid in my region, so I’m careful with fuchsia which doesn’t like to dry out. First, I would never put it in a basket. Second, they really like to be planted in stumps. This is a Valley Oak segment from a really big tree struck by lightning that I got at the rodeo grounds. It’s really thick which nicely insulates the fuchsia in the summer.
