Our most recent century old blonde oak hardwood floor.
The closet floor was in decent shape. So the homeowner decided to leave it as original. The first 3 pictures are original/stripped & sanded/& final product.
We cut through over 3 layers of varnish & wax. The latest layer of varnish was 20 years ago. We cleaned up some pretty deep gouges & water damaged spots along with wood discoloration by the front door.
Again the customer was surprised we were able to make it look brand new again.

Back from an emergency trip to Mentor to get my brother & his family back into their home with a working bathroom again. They had a plumbing leak under his slab floor in the middle of winter.
The plumbing company had to break up the slab to repair the plumbing in the bathroom & his son’s room, then backfill. They were also responsible for installing the tub, toilet & vanity as part of their plumbing.
Our job was to level the concrete slab where they back filled within 1/4”. Then install tile LVP flooring in the bathroom, carpet in his son’s room, repair drywall patches, install trim, caulk & leave it ready for my brother to prime & paint.
It sure felt good to get accolades from the plumbing contractor we shared this job with.

This was a fun holiday project. This antique oak vent cover needed some TLC to bring it back to life. 2 of the spindles had broken over the years. It took 12 tries to get six 1” balls drilled right to reproduce the original design. The customer is going to refinish the woodwork in their house & wanted it left bare.
We also refaced & stabilized an antique pull down attic stair. Originally they had hired me to put in an electric attic stair. They had gotten a deal for under $200 on an auction site for electric attic stairs that run around $1500. When I opened the box the only thing there was the stairs. No motor, no chassis nor door. Be careful when buying deals too good to be true off the internet.
We were able to reface & stabilize the existing folding stairs for about the same cost of installing new attic stairs. But without the cost of the new stairs. All in all we were able to do both projects for around the original quoted price of just the stairs.

Wish we could have done more! Funds were low, half of our work staff fell through just before the project & there were some difficult jobs to be done. Since, it was a house built around a trailer. We went up for a week in the beginning to get a hold on the situation. Then came back & prepped for the trip for a week & went back up to get what we could get done in a week. We ended up giving 2 weeks & it still wasn’t enough for the long list of difficult repairs. We prioritized the list & got done what we could to improve her situation. In the end, we had to make the decision to close up & head home.
We were able to clean out & prep the house for work, demo walls, run wires, move the kitchen to the other side of the house, move the laundry area, build an entry & closet for a new master bedroom. We cleared out areas of the yard & uncovered an outdoor meat smoking pit amongst other things. We moved the clients belongings to NY from OH, consulted, acquired materials from stores 40 minutes away, got her connected with neighbors & local resources for any help she might need from here out.
All in all we learned from this experienced & got to help out a friend for the experience getting someone moved to & set up “off grid”
Now we are planning on staying home in Ohio for the winter, help our loyal customer base here with their projects & reorganizing our plans to travel & help people get set up off grid. There was much learned on this trip we can apply to help our customers more in the future. All in all we are proud of what we are able to get accomplished & feel we gave her more than her moneys worth. Which was the plan, in exchange for the experience.

DRIVER NEEDED FOR 10 hour round trip.
We need a driver to bring my van to NY to pick up the rest of my tools & equipment & take them back to ohio.

The pay is $300 for the trip.
Expect about $150 in gas. The rest is yours.
Gotta be this Sunday or Monday.

Van is insured, you must be insured & a legal driver. Must have GPS & a phone to find us & keep contact. We are off grid in the mountains & it is an hour drive off the freeway with some rough gravel roads.

It’s a beautiful drive through the mountains.

Many significant changes to my life have pushed us into the next phase of Rick of Wood.
Natasha McKeown, Sophie (our traveling dog) & I are working hard towards getting a truck & trailer.
After years of preparation, planning, hands on experiences & studying, we are now on the road setting up & renovating an off grid property in the Allegheny mountains in NY.
We will definitely make a post when it is complete.
When we get back, we will be setting up new clients for off grid setups & renovations across the USA.
Between traveling out of state for these projects, we will be still helping our customers out in NE Ohio that got us to this point. If you need a project scheduled after September, let us know.

Spent almost 3 weeks with Mom last month. Every year I do her gardens for Mother’s Day. This year she wanted a fence & a new garden to go with it. Then her neighbor wanted a vinyl fence & a garden too. Her friend needed a garbage disposal installed while I was there & they want more work done when I’m back up there. Then a friend referred me to his neighbor & I installed 2 TV wall mounts for him & installed a faucet for my friend. Then my mother’s other neighbor wanted a new garden tilled under her bay window. She also wanted an accessibility ramp for her garage entrance. I needed to make a wider one for my mom since I installed the screen door. She is having me install a screen door later so I made hers wide too. I assessed some needed railings for another neighbor’s daughter also to be done on a future trip.
I had customers waiting on me at home too.

3 years of officially being in business as an LLC.
Thank you to all of my customers, supporters & followers for my success so far!
This is going to be a great year full of more smiling customers lining up for work from me.
I have good news that I have found someone to be my new experienced side kick for a while & maybe longer if he likes it. I’ll introduce him when he gets here.
