Another leaking shower this week… and unfortunately, another failed installation caused by using the wrong products and improper waterproofing methods.

Here’s what we found during demo:

• Backer board installed in the wet area
• Shower pan liner was cut at the curb, allowing water to escape
• Screws/nails were installed through the curb area, creating direct paths for water pe*******on
• “Water-resistant” materials were used where a true waterproof system should have been installed

Backer board is NOT waterproof. It’s only water resistant — meaning it absorbs moisture over time. As you can see, that leads to mold, rot, and major damage behind the tile.

This is why hiring a qualified tile contractor matters. A tile shower is only as good as the waterproofing system behind it.

POV: You decide to remove over 1,200 river rocks from the mesh and install every single one by hand because “it’ll look better.” 😅

Worth it? Absolutely. 🔥

This slow-mo video shows just a small part of the process behind this custom shower floor. Every stone was individually placed to give it a more natural look and avoid that obvious “sheet pattern” you usually see with river rock floors.

My back may never forgive me… but the finished product was worth every piece. 👌

This tub surround got a simple refresh with fresh grout and new caulking, and the difference speaks for itself. Sometimes you don’t need a full remodel to make a bathroom feel clean, bright, and refreshed again.

Fresh grout lines and clean caulking can completely bring a shower back to life. 👌

Wrapping up my final day here in Las Vegas after an incredible few days at the tile and hardware shows.

Honestly, it’s been a great experience getting hands-on with all the new technology coming into the industry — from advanced waterproofing systems to new installation methods and materials that are raising the bar across the board.

As a tile installer, it’s important to stay up to date, and this trip was all about sharpening my skills, learning from the best, and bringing that knowledge back to my customers.

Always investing in better systems, better installs, and better results.

First stop: Las Vegas for Coverings 2026.

Out here taking some time to keep improving the business—learning new installation methods, updated waterproofing systems, and getting hands-on with the latest tile materials and trends in the industry.
