Where does the name "Skeleton Key" come from?
The term started because the key was stripped to it's essential parts so it could open multiple styles of locks. In a way, it was an early version of a 'Master Key". However, it's become a bit of an umbrella term for just about any antique key.

Interesting Lock Facts:
Although the modern version of push-to-start cars did not enter the scene until the early 2000s the first use of an electric button starter was in 1912!
The Cadillac Model Thirty was the first "push-to-start" vehicle in an effort to reduce injuries that were occurring from the hand crank.

Did you know?
The oldest lock ever used is over 4000 years old!! It was discovered in the ruins of the Khorsabad Palace near Nineveh and was invented by the Assyrians. Similar versions have even been found in Egypt!

Interesting Lock History:
After the devastating damage done to Hiroshima there was still a structure that remained in tact. The Teikoku Bank, located close to the hypocenter of the blast, held a Mosler safe that was manufactured in Hamilton, Ohio.
Although the building crumpled, the vault remained relatively unharmed and the Army Lieutenant on site surveying reported “The vaults were entirely intact and except for the exterior being burned and rusted there was no damage.”
The US government even tested the Mosler safe vault doors at Yucca Flats where they passed with flying colors still.

Fun Lock History:
Linus Yale Jr, the creator of Yale Locks; not to be confused with Elihu Yale the namesake of Yale University, developed the modern Pin Tumbler lock in 1861.
We still use this system today and it is the basis for just about every lock with a keyway.

Fun Key History:
The first Company to use a Double-Sided Key in the ignition of cars was Ford in 1965.
Before then, keys were a lot like house keys and cut on only one side. This change made for greater security and also much easier to stick the key in!
