We would like to extend a special thank you to our 2023 Waseca County 4-H Donors & Supporters!

Their extreme generosity made it possible for Waseca County 4-H to grow to 295 youth members and 70 adult volunteers. We conducted 22 hours of programming at partner sites, delivered over 30 hours of animal science educational opportunities, and had 29% of community club members serve in a leadership role.

We put this together as a fun way to look at what we have done over the past year. Thank you all for an amazing season, for supporting us, for supporting local youth, and for supporting local organizations. It truly takes a village, or in this case, Waseca.

🪴Oriana🪴

Hello! My name is Oriana Jewison, and I have been working at Jakes Greenhouse for the past few months. I am active in both Waseca FFA and 4-H. I show poultry (chickens and ducks), pigs, and rabbits in 4-H. In my free time I like to be outside with my livestock and doing other fun activities outside such as camping and gardening. I have just completed seventh grade and enjoy playing volleyball during the fall and winter. I also love doing crafts, especially needle art projects. I love being with my family and with my animals, but I also love plants and flowers too! I was on the Waseca County Crop Scouting Team last year, where our team placed first. When I grow up I would like to do something livestock or agronomy related. That is why I decided to apply and work at Jakes Greenhouse.

I first heard about Jakes Greenhouse through FFA. The Waseca County FFA Chapter was doing a “Plant Sales” fundraiser through the greenhouse, where 10% of total profits were given to Waseca FFA if they had help with planting to work off the money we would make. I decided to apply because flowers and plants were one of my many interests. I have really enjoyed working at Jakes Greenhouse for many reasons. I learned so much about flowers and plants, and also had a lot of fun working and planting flowers. It was an amazing experience! I loved that during the cold winter and early spring months, I could come and work at the greenhouse and the beautiful flowers would remind me of spring and summer again! There are many more reasons, but over all, Jakes Greenhouse will be an experience I will never forget!

Our third and final organization is UMN Extension Waseca County 4-H. Both Jake and Lizzie have friends that were in 4-H and Lizzie was in 4-H herself in Olmsted County. Not to mention two of our frequent volunteers, Oriana and Karley, are not only involved in FFA and soon both will be in marching band, but these two are also involved in 4-H. When we mentioned to Oriana that we were thinking of Waseca County 4-H her face lit up and we knew that 4-H was going to be one of our organizations. Waseca County 4-H reaches the whole county and encourages youth to work on projects, find hobbies, and find their passion. The 4-H motto is “making the best better” and there isn’t a future if we aren’t encouraging youth to grow. Come out and support local youth that pledge their head to clearer thinking, their heart to greater loyalty, their hands to larger service, and their health to better living for their club, our community, our country, and our world. Proceeds will be used to support the Ag Learning Lab allowing people to interact with agriculture in a fun, engaging way. It will be housed in the 4-H buildings at the Waseca, Rice, Freeborn, and Steele County Fair.

Our second organization is the Waseca Marching Jays led by Mr. Devon Lawrence! Both Jake and Lizzie were in band in high school so the reason we picked them is a no-brainer; Lizzie participated in marching band in both highschool and college. Band provides a great way to take a break between classes, is one of the few activities that stimulates both sides of your brain, and allows you to work as a group to produce great music. The Waseca Marching Jays have 95 members, participated in 8 competitions, and were the MN State Fair Class B champions this past year. Clearly there is a love for band in the community and we want to support youth in fine arts. Both Jake and Lizzie have friendships that are a direct result of being in band. We want to thank our high school and college band directors for allowing us to find affirmation in making music. Thank you Mr. Kopetzki, Ms. Kaus, Dr. McAnn, and Dr. Leonard!

Our first organization is Aspyn Acres Wildlife Rehab and Farm Sanctuary! We had the opportunity to go out and visit the area and of course see all the animals. Aspyn Acres has partnered with 4 area organizations that work with humans with adaptabilities. This gives people a chance to be exposed to agriculture when they may not have that opportunity otherwise. You are able to sponsor an animal for $5 so people feel like the animal is a part of their family and create a deeper bond. At Jake’s Greenhouse we believe in exposing people from all walks of life to agriculture and Aspyn Acres is doing just that. Come out this weekend to support them (and their cute animals).
