What is EAB? Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive insect that kills ash trees. The adult beetle lays an egg under the bark of ash tree. The egg hatches into a larval stage that feeds on the living tissue (cambium) of the tree. As the larva feeds, it cuts off the nutrient flow to the rest of the tree above (girdling). Once mature, the adult beetle leaves the tree creating a "D" shaped exit hole.
Signs of EAB damage: Ash trees infected with EAB are often first identified by the appearance of bark "flecking". Flecking occurs when wood peckers remove the outer layer of bark in search of the EAB larva creating a light colored, patchy look to the trees trunk and limbs. Crown thinning, or branch tip die back, is another early sign. EAB attacks the upper part of the tree first, so early detection can be difficult.
Treatments are most effective when used as a preventative or if infestations are caught early, so please don't wait until its too late! Call today for your free estimate. (715) 292-5145
