We are pleased to announce that we will be leading a team composed of structural and envelope engineers, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger and Annapolis Landscape Architects for a redesign of the courtyard at All Souls Church, Unitarian on 16th St. NW in Washington, DC. The National Register church, patterned after London’s St. Martin-in-the Fields was designed in 1922 by Charles Allerton Coolidge FAIA (1858–1936) best known as a partner in the firm of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, successors to the firm of Henry Hobson Richardson. Coolidge was also senior partner in that firm's successors, Coolidge & Shattuck and Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch & Abbott. Coolidge later served on the Commission of Fine Arts.

All Souls was established in 1821 as First Unitarian Church. Founders included Secretary of State and future President John Quincy Adams; Secretary of War and future Vice President John C. Calhoun; Architect of the Capitol Charles Bulfinch; and newspaper publisher, city alderman, and future mayor Joseph Gales.

Bulfinch designed the church’s first building, at Sixth and D Streets NW, close to City Hall. President James Monroe donated $100 toward the bell, which was forged by Paul Revere’s son, Joseph Revere. During the Civil War, the church was used for a time as a hospital. In 1878, the congregation moved to a new building at 14th and L Streets NW, and took on a new name: All Souls Unitarian. The church moved to its current location upon the completion of Coolidge's design in 1924.
