Spread the word - Love & Carrots is hiring! 🧑‍🌾👷‍♀️ We are seeking both Installation Crew Members and an Assistant Project Manager to join our team.

Installation crew members are responsible for bringing garden designs into reality. They work outside in all weather conditions installing vegetable gardens and perennial landscapes, as well as building fences, patios, and other hardscaping elements. Ideal candidates are solutions-oriented, enjoy working in teams, and have prior work experience in construction and/or landscaping.

The Assistant Project Manager will help to coordinate the many moving pieces of our design and installation pipeline. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and loves coming up with innovative solutions to common problems. If you find joy in both native plants and well-maintained spreadsheets, we’d love to hear from you!

Please see our website for the full position descriptions. Candidates will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and both positions are available until filled - apply today!

🫛 May we peas have your attention??🫛

Early to mid spring is the best time of year to plant your peas, so that you can enjoy a bountiful harvest in May and June! Keep an eye on them as they sprout and reseed as necessary to ensure full germination- they’re a favorite snack for squirrels at this stage.

Peas fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, transforming this essential nutrient into a usable form for other plants. This makes peas a great choice to plant on a trellis before summer cucumbers, which consume lots of nitrogen. They’re also self-regulating, meaning that they’ll produce only as many fruits as they need (and will stop producing once there are enough on the vine). Continuous harvesting tells the plant that it needs to produce more fruits, giving you even more peas to enjoy!

Not sure where to start? Check out the link in our bio to watch a video guiding you through all you need to sow peas (Hint: you will need peas and a trellis)

We grow all of our annual vegetable transplants in house, but to source the native plants we use in landscape installations we partner up with plant nurseries across the Chesapeake. We’re grateful to have joined today on a tour of some new (to us) local nurseries, and see a glimpse of the spring ahead inside their greenhouses. The perennial planting season is just about to start, and we couldn’t be more stoked!

Next week marks the official beginning of the planting season here in DC, and our crew is all packed up and ready to spring into action!

While our transplants are still sizing up in our greenhouse, we’ll start the gardening season focused on seeding the earliest spring crops - snap and snow peas, spinach, and a few other cold-hardy leafy greens - and in just a few weeks, the world will be green once again!

Swipe to see a preview of what’s to come… and us before we remembered self timers exist 🤓🧑‍🌾

January is when we begin the hard work of cleaning out and incorporating new compost into every single one of our client’s beds, setting them up for success all season long. Clearing out pesty overwintered crops, harvesting anything that will bolt once temperatures rise, and incorporating new compost ensures that your garden beds will be ready for your first spring plantings.

Before you start planting, it’s vital to ensure you’re starting off with a healthy soil. From year to year, soil levels settle and become more compacted, making your vegetables work harder to get the nutrients and water they need. Mulch erodes as well, making weeds harder to manage around your garden. It’s important to refresh your soil annually by adding in organic matter (such as compost) to bring your beds up to level and promote a healthy soil ecosystem.

Don’t want to do the heavy lifting? We can do it for you! Reach out today to be added to our spring prep calendar - we’ve only got availability through February for these visits, so don’t delay!
