Last year in early February, after a nationwide juried open call, Cunningham Quill Architects was selected to exhibit our work in the United States Pavilion at the 19th International Biennale of Architecture in Venice 2025. As one of only 54 architects from across the country, our affordable housing project embraced the welcoming theme, “Porch: An Architecture of Generosity”. The exhibition on American design was commissioned by the United States Department of State in partnership with the Fay Jones School of Architecture & Design at the University of Arkansas (Commissioner Peter MacKeith - Dean), DesignConnects (Commissioner Susan Chin - Principal) and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Commissioner Rod Bigelow - Executive Director).

In late November, Lee Quill FAIA and Ralph Cunningham FAIA traveled to Venice, Italy to participate in the Biennale’s Closing Ceremonies. This three-day event (11/21/25 - 11/23/25) - ‘Gathering and Giving Thanks’ was organized around “PORCHFEST”, an on-going activation and programming of the pavilion at key dates and included design talks, readings, hands-on artwork constructions, musical and theatrical performances. On Friday afternoon in the US Pavilion, Ralph joined Lee in his Design Dialogue talk about the Terraces East project, the role affordable housing occupies in our firm culture of giving back and helping others, and the welcoming nature our project’s porch has played in connecting and engaging residents, neighbors and the community at large.

On the evening of the last day of the Biennale, the co-commissioners and their team gathered all in attendance for a “Porch Farewell”. Author Charlie Hailey gave a reading from his inspirational book “The Porch, Meditations on the Edge of Nature” and Peter MacKeith and Susan Chin gave thanks and gratitude to each other, the US Department of State, their friends at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the City of Venice, their friends at the Biennale, and to all in attendance and that participated in the exhibit, for the opportunity to represent our nation, our nation’s architecture and our nation’s larger culture. After a final walk through of the exhibits in the pavilion, and a few parting conversations with our colleagues, we said goodbye to an amazing and inspirational experience, grateful to have been part of this premier international exhibition of exceptional, conceptual architectural works from around the world.

Celebrating 30 Years of CQA!

Today we celebrate 30 years of Cunningham | Quill Architects!

Founded in Washington, DC and now with an office in Charlotte, our work over the past three decades reflects something greater than buildings alone—it reflects the people behind them.

From the talented architects and staff who shape each project, to the clients and collaborators who trust us with their vision, every design is the result of meaningful partnerships. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re grateful for the community that has made 30 years of thoughtful design possible and look forward to continuing our collaboration in the years to come.

On January 12, 2026, Principal John Michael Day AIA, LEED AP, and AIA | DC Board Member participated in the 2026 AIA Leadership Summit Hill Day. Michael, along with more than 500 AIA members, met with state delegates to advocate for legislation that will significantly impact the architecture profession and the communities in which we practice.
On behalf of the AIA| DC membership, the following legislation was presented to Michael Fraser, Legislative Counsel to Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton.
Professional classification and Student Loan Caps - AIA supports government recognition of the Masters of Architecture and Doctorate of Architecture degree as a professional degree for the purposes of federal student loan disbursement. AIA also opposes new caps on federal student loans as well and supports using the “full cost of attendance” as the limit for student borrowing.

Historic Preservation - Following the demolition of the White House East Wing and the lack of transparency surrounding the project, AIA supports the People’s White House Historic Preservation Act. The legislation will promote excellence, innovation, and thoughtful stewardship of historic assets.

179D High-Performance Building Tax Credit – This tax credit is essential for promoting energy-efficient design in commercial and public buildings. By incentivizing high-performance projects, it helps architects achieve energy targets and supports the construction of resilient community structures. With the credit set to expire in June 2026, extending it is crucial for architects’ long-term planning and competitiveness, as well as to sustain local jobs and advance resilient, energy-efficient buildings nationwide.

Housing Legislation – AIA supports both the Housing for the 21st Century Act passed by the House and the ROAD to Housing Act passed by the Senate. AIA encourages swift bipartisan cooperation towards a final comprehensive bill that combats housing challenges. Reform will empower architects to deliver affordable, innovative, and community-focused designs.

Design Freedom - AIA supports legislation to ensure federal buildings reflect local context, culture, and values, not a mandated national style. The Democracy in Design Act provides clear federal design policies that enable architects to balance performance, cost, and public trust while avoiding unnecessary costs from stylistic mandates.

ADC Symposium & Fletcher-Johnson Site Redevelopment: Affordable Housing for Populations Living with Dementia

Our team was honored to take part in the Dementia Village Symposium in Washington, D.C. this fall, which convened health officials, property developers, and global leaders in dementia care to discuss the urgent need for housing for seniors living with dementia in the District looking at The Hogeweyk, a dementia village in the Netherlands designed by Buro Kade.

Cunningham | Quill is proud to be collaborating with Gragg Cardona Souadi on the redevelopment of the former Fletcher-Johnson Middle School campus, which will include a new dementia village designed to provide supportive housing and critical community resources.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately 16 percent of D.C.’s 84,000 seniors are living with dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease — a rate higher than any other county or state in the nation. The Fletcher-Johnson redevelopment aims to address this growing challenge by creating dignified, supportive housing and care for this underserved and rapidly increasing population.

Recovery Café DC’s (RCDC) Mission statement reads:

“Recovery Café DC is a healing, transformative recovery community for all who have been traumatized by addiction and other mental health challenges, homelessness and incarceration.”

Participants have found a true community of support and acceptance that has enabled them to move forward with their lives, to heal, and help their peers to do so as well.

To support this goal and their important work, Cunningham Quill Architects approached the interior design of RCDC’s new space on Marion Barry Ave. in the District of Columbia’s historic Anacostia neighborhood, as a “Healing Basket” focusing on a design that comforts and supports. Design elements included simple but carefully selected palette of light, bright and warm calming elemental colors and natural textures such as cork and wood, presented in basketweave elements, alongside clean modern elements such as large expanses of operable glass walls and a glowing white metal mesh stair, to ensconce the community members in a feeling of comfort, safety, protection and healing.

The physical environment of the Recovery Café space supports and reinforces the RCDC’s goals the tone of each visit and showing the community members, through the quality of design and attention to detail the client and designers invested in this environment, that this is their space and they are valued, wanted and embraced into this welcoming community and place, regardless of where they are in their journey towards recovery.

We had the pleasure of participating in Recovery Café DC’s “Bridging the Gap” event, that highlighted RCDC’s journey, design, and mission with members of the community, as shown in the video. We thank you all for your thoughtful feedback and continued support!

Cunningham Quill Architects Exhibits Affordable Housing Project at the Venice Biennale of Architecture – 2025

Cunningham Quill Architects is honored to have been selected to exhibit in the United States Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venice. One of 54 architects, landscape architects, designers and artists selected through a national juried Open Call from across the U.S. and its territories, our project is part of the exhibition that showcases “the diversity of contemporary American design” and “a multifaceted portrait of American architecture that spans geographies, scales, disciplines and identities, contributing to the broader dialogue on the role of architecture in fostering generosity, connection, and cultural exchange”.

Organized and led by Co-Commissioners Peter MacKeith, Dean of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas; Susan Chin, Founding Principal, DesignConnects; and Rod Bigelow, Executive Director, Crystal Bridges Museum of Art and the Momentary, PORCH: An Architecture of Generosity explores the porch as a site of civic and cultural life through 54 curated exhibitor models (Porch Windows), a library of books by exhibitors & others and American Porch Life - a series of panels illustrating the role of the porch through American history by the UACDC.

Our exhibition contribution titled “Terraces East: Linking to Neighborhood & Nature” features models of our award-winning family focused affordable housing project with Affordable Homes and Communities, Inc. (AHC) and its community porch illustrating multiple interpretations of this social space, a place of welcome, play, engagement, belonging and connection to home.

Since the Venice Biennale’s opening in May 2025, the U.S. Pavilion with its new contemporary porch installation designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects, Julie Bargmann of DIRT Studio & 10x10 Studio, and Stephen Burke’s Man Made, the exhibition and our “Porch Window” exhibit have had more than 45,000 visitors. The Biennale runs through November 23.
