the Big S goes under construction

Architecture of a Polyclinic defined by its main staircase. Twisting, turning flights create diverse spaces stacked on top of the other. Playful assembly of vertical movement as seen looks like a big “S” written on the façade, giving the Polyclinic its identity. Functioning as natural treadmill, main staircase transcends its circulation function into social space, providing sense of individuality to departments and at the same time, bringing them together as one unit.

The BougainVILLA wins SONA AWARDS
We are super thrilled to share that our recently completed project, the BougainVILLA won a Society of Nepalese Architects " SONA" Awards for ARCHITECTURE EXCELLENCE 2022 yesterday. An apartment building designed to provide residents with generous outdoor spaces at each level, builds on the neighborhood greenery. Series of floating verandas, carved to allow maximum winter sun into apartments and embellished with the plants that the property is named after, animate the façade. Here, the landscape becomes the architecture, playing a key role in defining the building’s identity and experience.

ATRIUM CASINO HOTEL under CONSTRUCTION
The Atrium Hotel in Birtamode, eastern Nepal, builds on the local climate and vegetation to reduce its operational costs on electricity and water consumption. Responding to a warm climate, the hospitality program is organized around atriums and courtyards that establishes a series of airy indoor spaces connected with the outdoor areas dedicated for banquet, meetings, dining, and pool. The landscape design inspired by the tea plantations of Jhapa, extends inwards and then over the buildings, giving the hotel its identity besides creating shaded rooftop spill outs.

OFFICES AS BIOMES: As we prepare to get back to the offices, we at MAP are exploring ways to get little bit of the outdoors inside and in the process make the work environments more fun and greener.

Plants play a crucial role in our interior design, including that of our own studios. Besides being a visual treat, could plants replace some of the conventional walls, sound insulation, privacy screens and fresh-air units to transform the workplaces into healthier and more ecological indoor spaces? We have been putting plants to test in creating symbiotic biomes with humans and machines where temperature and Co2 exchanges are equalized.

THE EYE WINS THE INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY AWARDS

We are pleased to announce that our project, the EYE (officially known as LALITA BHAWAN), has won the 2021-2022 Asia Pacific Property Awards in the Office Development category.

The building celebrates moderate climate of Kathmandu. Interior spaces are mostly ventilated naturally. Passive architectural elements such as vertical louvers, solid walls and glazing are meticulously appointed to optimize daylighting and shade. Integrated greenery and water feature are essential part of ecological response as much as creating biophilic experiences. Located in high seismic zone, the structural challenges are leveraged to create triangulated geometries. All these responses together create a commercial architecture with a distinct identity.

Zero, or Śūnya in Sanskrit has a philosophical and spiritual relationship with yoga, meditation and wellness. It is believed that “practicing yoga and meditation leads the mind attain a sense of nothingness. Understanding Śūnya leads to a spiritual liberation.” A spa is associated with healing of mind and body that is non-linear [or a circular] process...and thus the birth of 'Zero Spa' in Coorg, India. Various functions are organized in a circular format all under one roof that undulates in height to create diverse guest experiences. At the center is the pond of healing an environmental and symbolic feature.

THE DIAGONAL
Consists of four apartments over two levels of offices. Each apartment is designed to optimize the winter sun and summer breeze through operable glazing shaded by perimeter balconies. All the primary spaces of the apartment face southwest. Aluminum Composite Panels [ACP] placed diagonally along the balconies serve as additional shading device to further minimize solar exposure while still opening the apartments to winter sunlight and views. These diagonal shading panels are integral part of the building’s architectural identity.

Pyramidal form of the building is a direct translation of the local zoning ordinance that requires the floors to step back at 4:1 ratio.

Fully glazed exterior walls maximize daylighting and the views. Each floor plate has a perimeter balcony that functions as a spill-out, also shades the facade from the summer sun.

To avoid blocking the views, the balcony railing is designed to be indiscernible – requiring the members to be extremely slender. Array of vertical supports provide necessary rigidity to the delicate railing system. These supports fan upwards to open up the higher floors to better views – resulting in an architecture with radiating exoskeletal members.
