Why wouldn't you plant natives?!? Look who visited at this stunning patch of Agastache foeniculum (Anise Hyssop). We removed all the sod in this front garden and planted natives. Every time I stop by there it is abuzz (pun intended) with activity.

Also, because of native plant adaptations to the local environment, they require less watering and maintenance compared to non-native plants.

Did I mention they also sequester more carbon than grass and are beneficial to soil health due to their deep and extensive root systems.

Native plants support ecosystems by providing habitat for local wildlife, including birds, butterflies, bees and other insects.

Let us know if we can help you re-envision your garden to create a native plant haven.

Scroll through to see the construction of Tregaron's rain garden! We're committed to creating an ecologically beneficial and sustainable landscape. Using layers of sand, gravel, and soil a rain garden like this one will reduce runoff and provide a place to nourish and cultivate native trees and shrubs. A previously soggy area will be transformed. Stay tuned to see the plantings, they will be coming soon!

A lot can be done with a small space! We surrounded a handcrafted round patio with native shrubs, trees, and perennials, and installed a new front walkway way with custom railings to add curb appeal and safety. Gardens like this beautify your front outdoor space, add functionality, and are beneficial to the urban environment.

Here are some perennials that have great winter interest, and are all adaptable plants that have high success rates (if planted in the right conditions).

Dryopteris x australis--this is a wonderful fern that persists through the winter and retains a beautiful medium green color. Cultural requirements: moist, well-drained, humus soils, and part sun/shade.
Echinacea purpurea--a fantastic native bloomer that has strong seed heads that remain all winter. They are an important food source for local and migratory birds and also provide great texture in the winter garden. Cultural requirements: moist, well-drained, humus soils, and full sun.
Sedum 'Autumn Joy'--a perennial that blooms in early fall with flat, star-shaped blooms. These are strong enough to withstand winter and look great as upright dried flowers. Cultural requirements: less fertile soil, rocky soil and full sun. They can also handle drought.
Phlox subdulata--a beautiful native creeper that I caught blooming on a warm winter day. Cultural requirements moist, well-drained, humus soils, and full sun.

Which one do you like best? Try them!

Waiting for spring . . .

Now is a great time to design a no-grass gardens to create native habitats and more functional space for you. There are so many ways to redefine your garden if you are willing to forgo your grass. Whether you're a minimalist at heart or a lover of colorful blossoms, we tailor our designs to suit your unique vision.

The garden featured is predominantly shade, so removed the patchy grass, encircled the mature Magnolia with river rock and installed a raised walkway to protect its roots and ensure better oxygenation. We planted native ferns, Huechera and Tricyrtis. And then we installed pathways for better access to more areas of the garden.
