The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is once again offering free native tree seedlings through its Backyard Buffers program. If you have a stream, creek, drainage ditch, or other waterway on or near your property, you may be eligible to reserve a โ€œbuffer in a bagโ€ to plant this spring.

Each bag includes 20โ€“30 native tree and shrub seedlings, typically 1โ€“2 feet tall, along with guidance from Maryland Forest Service staff on planting and care. Planting trees along waterways helps reduce erosion, improve water quality, provide wildlife habitat, and keep streams cooler during hot summer months.

Reservations are generally open through March, with seedlings distributed in time for spring planting. Supplies are limited and available first-come, first-served, with pickup locations and contacts varying by county.

Programs like this help support Marylandโ€™s goal of planting 5 million trees by 2031โ€”and theyโ€™re a great way for homeowners to contribute to healthier landscapes and waterways. ๐ŸŒณ

Did you know that Maryland is home to 22 species of oak trees, with 21 of them native to the state? Oaks are among the most important trees in our landscape, supporting thousands of native wildlife speciesโ€”from birds and mammals to insects and pollinators. They also play a key role in healthy forests and urban tree canopies.

Marylandโ€™s state tree, the White Oak (Quercus alba), is one of the most iconic species in our region and has long been valued for its strength, longevity, and ecological importance.

For arborists, land managers, and tree lovers alike, oaks are a reminder of how critical native species are to sustaining healthy ecosystems and resilient landscapes.

๐Ÿšจ The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced the expansion of its spotted lanternfly quarantine zone to include two new counties - Charles and Garrett - effective immediately. This quarantine restricts the movement of regulated articles that might contain the spotted lanternfly in any of its life stages, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults.

Businesses, municipalities, and government agencies requiring any regulated item's movement within or from the quarantine zone must have a specialized permit. The permit may be obtained by taking a free online training course and exam through PennState Extension. Examples of regulated articles include landscaping, remodeling, or construction waste; packing materials like wood boxes or crates; plants and plant parts; vehicles; and other outdoor items.
