After 36 years at John Deere, most people might ease into retirement. Gene Theis chose a different path — and the Cedar Valley is better for it.

For more than a decade, Gene has volunteered over 30 hours every week at the Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity ReStore, bringing the same work ethic and craftsmanship he spent a career building to every donated item he cleans, repairs, prices, and restores. His mechanical skills and meticulous attention to detail directly improve the quality of merchandise available for sale — which means more funding for safe, affordable housing in the community he calls home.

But Gene's impact goes beyond the work itself. Habitat for Humanity ReStore-Waterloo, Iowa staff and fellow volunteers know they can count on him — not just to show up, but to step up. He mentors newer volunteers, tackles the hardest jobs without hesitation, and leads with the kind of quiet, steady example that sets the tone for an entire team.

More than 10 years. More than 30 hours a week. All of it given with humility, consistency, and genuine care. That's Gene. 💚

Ben has been a dedicated ReStore volunteer for nine years. He assists in helping customers find what they need.

In his free time, Ben enjoys watching TV and spending time with his family. He is also involved with The Arc of the Cedar Valley, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals with disabilities.
