Good tips from Andre the farmer! Our raised beds can be custom made but are typically only 2 feet wide (length varies) to accommodate walking around all sides of the bed for easy access. Seed selection is important when it comes to what zone we are in (northern Indiana in our Waterloo area and surroundings) zone 6a. This is so you don’t try to grow a tropical veggie that will not have the time to mature before our frost date.
Soil is important as well but many people do different types. Beat to check with your landscaping company to help you choose. We like to use raised bed soil mixed with amendments. Happy gardening!

Even though we may experience a “false spring” and planting may need to wait, this is an excellent time to begin preparing your soil. Proper soil preparation and amendment now will ensure your garden is ready for a successful planting season.

If you don’t yet have a planter, now is the perfect time to purchase one and begin the filling process. Whether you choose a high-quality potting mix or a bulk soil blend from a local landscaping supplier, it’s important to start with a strong foundation.

For elevated planters, line the bottom with landscape fabric to support proper drainage while preventing soil loss. Fill with your soil mix, then incorporate appropriate amendments—such as bone meal—based on what you plan to grow. Water the soil thoroughly and allow it time to rest and condition before planting.

Allowing the soil to “cook” or settle for a short period helps nutrients integrate and creates an optimal environment for healthy plant growth once the season begins.
